Art therapy is a non-threatening way to help people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), experience their feelings. PTSD is extremely common among war veterans, especially those who have experienced combat. Symptoms can include psychological distress, depression, substance abuse, hyper-vigilance and diminished interest from previous hobbies and passions.
Family Service of Racine’s One Thousand Words Veterans Art Therapy program is based on art being both healing and life-enhancing. Our counselors use the creative process to help veterans work through traumatic experiences, cope better with stress, build better relationships and increase cognitive abilities. Thought provoking art work created by veterans from Southeast Wisconsin will be on display in various mediums from drawing and painting to photography.
