An All American Brass Spectacular
RACINE — The Belle City Brassworks brass band, conducted by Douglas Johnson, will present “An All American Brass Spectacular” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, in the Washington Park High School Theater, 1901 12th St.
The Brassworks consists of 40 of the top brass and percussion musicians in southeastern Wisconsin.
The annual concert will feature guest soloist Bobby Lewis on trumpet. Lewis is a Wisconsin native and received his Bachelor of Music Degree in Education and Master of Music Degree in Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He leads two jazz ensembles performing in jazz clubs in Chicago and in Europe.
The concert also features vocalist Jeannie Hatfield, of Racine, who is a past Miss Wisconsin and is a feature vocalist in southeastern Wisconsin venues throughout the year.
BrassANova, an all region high school honors brass ensemble will also perform. These brass student musicians were recommended by their high school music director or private music instructors.
The concert will feature an entertaining mix of music coupled with the dynamic sound of an all brass band. Repertoire for the concert includes big band, pop and a bit of classic arrangements with Lewis performing with both groups. The finale, “Sing, Sing, Sing” combines all of the performers on stage providing an exciting and powerful finish.
The band’s repertoire is all-American, featuring “An American In Paris” and “Strike Up The Band” by Gershwin, “America Salute” by Gould, “American’s We” arranged by Ken Norman, “American Patrol” by Meachen and “Fanfare Americana.” In addition, soloists will perform “Birth of the Blues,” “Land of Make Believe” and a tribute to Louis Armstrong, “Swing That Music.”
Tickets cost $8 for adults and $6 for seniors and students and will be sold at the box office the afternoon of the concert. Advance tickets are available at Schmitt Music.
