SOMERS — The University of Wisconsin—Parkside Opera Workshop presents “Opera through the Ages” for three performances Friday through Sunday, Nov. 20—22, in the Communication Arts Theatre, 900 Wood Road.
“Throughout history there have been so many wonderful operas, so we decided that this year we would showcase the best of the best,” said UW—Parkside student Tina Skinner. “The cast will be performing scenes from four different operas, each representing a different musical era.”
Skinner said opera’s Baroque era is epitomized by Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas” while the Classical period is exemplified by Mozart’s “Le Nozze Di Figaro.” From the Romantic era, audiences will enjoy Gaetano Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore” (Elixir of Love) and the evening closes with the 20th century opera “The Medium” by Gian Carlo Menotti.
Skinner said the scenes being prepared for presentation are from some of opera’s most popular works and will be exceptionally well voiced.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $$10 for adults and $$7 for students and seniors.

Nov. 22 is the registration deadline for JANUARY'S TUESDAY NIGHT CATHOLIC BIBLE STUDY......The course will cover the BOOK OF AMOS.

The Prophet Amos would have probably referred to himself as a 'nobody'. He was a fruit picker and shepherd who lacked any formal or religious education, yet he was called by God for an important mission. Just when Israel thought they were doing great and living the 'good life', God had Amos deliver a message of impending doom and gloom. Find out how very relevant that same message is to us today and what changes we might need to make in our own lives. This is a great course on social justice!!

Six classes plus intro night. Starts January 5th and is held every Tuesday evening thereafter at 6:30 pm for the duration of the course.

$$25 for textbook. (students will also need bible and catechism)

call Taynia Rasberry at 262—989—3996 for more info on location, the course or to sign up...

Racine Theatre Guild Announces Auditions
For “Murder at the Howard Johnson’s”

RACINE, WI—November 19, 2009—Auditions for the Racine Theatre Guild’s production of “Murder at the Howard Johnson’s,” an outrageous suspense—comedy about a love triangle, are being held at 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, November 23 and 24. Performances are scheduled on three weekends, January 22—February 7.

At the start of “Murder at the Howard Johnson’s,” Arlene and her lover Mitchell are plotting to murder her husband Paul. Months later, after learning that her lover has been unfaithful, Arlene convinces Paul to help her do away with Mitchell. Finally, feeling foolish and betrayed, the two men join forces against Arlene. Though the conspiracies falter, the humor is dead on.

There are roles for two men and one woman, ages 35 to 60. All roles are open. Auditions consist of cold readings from the script. Scripts are available in advance to peruse in the lobby or to check out of the building with payment of a refundable deposit.

Those interested in auditioning or volunteering for crew positions should report at 7 p.m. on either Monday, November 23 or Tuesday, November 24. The Racine Theatre Guild is a nonprofit community (amateur) theatre located at 2519 Northwestern Avenue (Highway 38) in Racine. The front doors will be open: no appointment necessary.

For further information, call the box office at 262—633—4218, visit RTG on the Web at www.racinetheatre.org, or stop by any weekday between noon and 6 p.m.

Monday, November 23rd, 2009 - The Second City

SOMERS — The University of Wisconsin—Parkside Arts Alive! series brings America’s favorite house of comedy, The Second City, to campus Monday, Nov. 23. Celebrating a half century of uproarious laughter, this 50th anniversary show begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Communication Arts Theatre, 900 Wood Road.
Started as a small cabaret theater on Chicago’s north side in 1959, Second City has grown to become a comedy empire. Its theaters in Chicago and Toronto are legendary for hilarious cutting—edge improvisation—based comedy and for launching the careers of dozens of stars.
“Beginning this fall, we will honor The Second City — both those who make it a legend as well as those who will keep us legendary,” said Andrew Alexander, Second City proprietor and executive producer. “At 50, we’re toasting our success of staying original and gleefully defying convention all these years.”
Tickets cost $$20 and can be purchased online at http://www.uwp.edu keyword tickets or by calling (262) 595—2307.
