Friday, December 04th, 2009 - Opening reception

KENOSHA — The H.F. Johnson Gallery of Art on the Carthage College campus, 2001 Alford Drive, will host the “International Nativity Creche Exhibition,” Dec. 1—18 and Jan. 5—23.
An opening reception will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, in conjunction with Carthage’s annual Christmas Festival.
The gallery celebrates the holidays with a free exhibit combining high renaissance art with the visionary art of handmade crèches. The Musser, Fiene, and Krinker nativity crèche collections collectively represent places as diverse as Russia, Africa, Japan, Mexico, Germany and numerous other locations. Every crèche was handmade with materials that were often unique to the area in which it was created and include traditional materials such as wood, silver, and clay. Artisans would use simple materials at hand and through devoted inspiration and highly focused imagination create what some would call works of art.
For this year, the Johnson Gallery is also pleased to include a splendid selection of original woodcuts, engravings and etchings from the 1500s and 1600s, including works by Rembrandt and Durer on loan from the collection of Emile Mathis of the Mathis Gallery and Conservation Shop of Racine.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

YORKVILLE — Apple Holler, 5006 S. Sylvania Ave., is celebrating the Christmas season by presenting an original musical show for children, “Mrs. Claus and the Littlest Reindeer,” Saturdays and Sundays and selected weekdays, Dec. 1—20. The show and craft session will take place in the Orchard Market where guests will be surrounded by twinkling lights, holiday decor and the setting of the Claus home at the North Pole.
Children ages 3 and older will enjoy this charming, interactive musical play that emphasizes the value of kindness and inner strength. Mrs. Claus is taking care of a baby reindeer named Ben, who is not growing up as big as the other reindeer, but he shows that he has a very big heart. The story helps children learn that character is more important than outward appearance. The children will also enjoy a cookie and take part in a holiday—themed activity. The culminating events will be a visit with live reindeer, which will be followed by an outdoor ride on The Candy Cane Express.
The cost of $$7 includes the musical show, a homemade cookie, a holiday activity, a visit with live reindeer, a ride on the Candy Cane Express, and an opportunity for photos with Mrs. Claus and the reindeer. A complimentary ticket is given for each group of 20 or more.
Performance times are 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon on select weekdays, and 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Reservations are required for all shows. Call (262) 886—8500 to make reservations and for available show times.

Saturday, November 28th, 2009 - 'Yuletide Letter...'

YORKVILLE — Apple Holler, 5006 S. Sylvania Ave., is introducing an uplifting revue that takes a candid and knowing look at a seasonal tradition — the family holiday letter. “A Yuletide Letter from the Purfekt Family — and Other Holiday Hogwash,” an Apple Holler original musical production, is being presented as part of an intimate dinner theater experience Nov. 28—Dec. 26. Performances will be held at various dates and times.
The idea behind this fun family show was the collaborative effort of Heather Clayton, entertainment director; Caitlin Kujawski, performer and costume manager; and Sheri Gavin, special projects manager.
“We wanted to create a family—friendly, musical show that would take a look at family life, as well as the holidays, and find the humor in them,” said Clayton. “At the same time, we wanted to remember the true meaning of family, love and the holidays.”
Mary Purfekt, the over—stressed and exhausted mother of the Purfekt Family, is writing their very first holiday letter. With the hard, cold facts of family—life—reality being less than ideal, Mary’s creative side begins to show itself in the telling of the past year’s events. Witty sketches, favorite traditional seasonal songs and clever parodies, bring Mary’s stories to life while sometimes exposing the reality behind them.
“The rush of the holiday season can be so stressful we end up losing sight of what’s important,” said Dave Flannery, owner of the Apple Holler Family Farm. “However, by gently poking fun at the holiday letter and the little things that make life a bit difficult, we aim to take everyone’s mind off the hectic nature of this season and remind families of the joy it can bring.”
The menu features Wisconsin wine and cheese tasting, corn bread, apple butter, Grandma’s dinner salad with homemade dressing, roast turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, apple stuffing, sweet potato casserole, applesauce and apple pie with cinnamon ice cream. Tickets cost $$44.99.
All performances are by reservation only, call (262) 886—8500. For more information, visit the Web, http:www.appleholler.com
