Saturday, November 21st, 2009 - Kiwanis Holiday Lights Spectacular

RACINE — Holiday time will come to the Racine Zoo on Nov. 21 when the Kiwanis Holiday Lights Foundation, Inc., turns on its annual lights display on for the first time this season. All are invited to the lighting festivities, which will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. and include a variety of entertainment and activities for all ages. Admission is $$2.
“Christmas Down Under” will be the theme of this year’s celebration, which will feature didgeridoo music as well as live entertainment by the Dairy Statesmen Barbershop Chorus and carolers from area schools. The main ceremony will take place at the zoo amphitheater at 5 p.m., when Santa Claus will kick things off with a fireworks display. Local dignitaries are scheduled to speak and youngsters are invited to help “sing” the light display on by lifting their voices in traditional holiday carols. Mr. Racine, Mark Eickhorst, will serve as master of ceremonies.
Santa’s elves will be on hand to guide folks around the zoo, and his reindeer will be available for photo opportunities. A ventriloquist and Willie the elf will also be part of the entertainment line—up. And, inside the main zoo building, visitors will have a chance to get up close and personal with some of the zoo’s animal residents. Racine’s Sons of Norway, sporting traditional Norwegian dress, will sell hot cocoa and food items throughout the celebration.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Kiwanis Holiday Lights spectacular, which originated as a yard display at the North Bay home of Racine industrialist George Wheary (they were once known as the Wheary Lights). Today’s display at the zoo features a wide range of animated and stationary lit figures, as well the traditional waterfall, the frame of which dates back to Wheary. The waterfall, which is 24 feet tall and 36 feet wide, is lit by 2,000 feet of rope lights.

The South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center welcomes the Laughter is the Best Medicine Tour on Saturday, November 21, at 7:30 pm. Enjoy an evening of fun, clean humor with Dobie Maxwell and Steve DeClark. The show serves as an antidote for the tension created by the seemingly unending, daily stress occurring in the country. Steve says, “We all need a good laugh right now and laughter is a great way to reduce stress and not take life so seriously.” Tickets are $$20 and may be purchased through the Box Office at 414—766—5049. As a way of saying thanks for their service to the country, veterans showing proper ID will get in to the show for free. “Veterans sacrifice so much for us that this is the least we can do.”

Dobie Maxwell and Steve DeClark started doing comedy together in Milwaukee back in 1983. Since then Dobie has become one of the top touring comedians in North America and one of the funniest comedians in the country. Also known as Mr. Lucky, Dobie has had bizarre luck and horrendous timing follow him since birth, and he has built a career on it. A comic’s comic, he was recently on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and has worked with Robin Williams, Tim Allen, Chris Rock, Dennis Miller, Drew Carey, Jeff Foxworthy, Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno and many others.

A Greendale native, Steve DeClark has been performing stand—up comedy for 15 years. In the mid 1990s he stopped touring the country to start a family and become a therapist. He has been married for 20 years now and when he does his marriage material “the audience laughs so hard they are crying.” His TV spots include America’s Funniest People and Comedy Central Standup. He has collaborated with Jane Matenaer in Trying to Live… Happily Ever After, which was recently performed at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center.
