Hemwall, 90, Christian physician, humanitarian, and consummate family man, gently slipped away from this life in the presence of his loving wife and daughters at St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center in Madison on Sunday, November 22, 1998. Gus was born in Chicago, Ill. on October 24, 1908, to his Swedish immigrant parents, the late Anders and Sigrid (nee: Larsson) Hemwall. In Cicero, Ill. on July 1, 1933, he married his beloved, Helen M. Moore. Dr. Hemwall served his country with the United States Army Medical Corps during World War II from late 1942 until May, 1946, achieving the rank of Major. He practiced family medicine for 60 years in Chicago's Austin neighborhood and later in Oak Park, Ill. as a general practitioner, general surgeon, and obstetrician. A kind and humble man of great faith, Dr. Hemwall touched the lives of many worldwide, through his work with patients, colleagues, evangelical Christian organizations, and professional groups. He was dearly loved by his family and will be fondly remembered among other things as a teller of corny jokes, fishing companion, expert repairman, patient teacher, parental role model, and loving husband, dad, and grandpa. Gus will be sorely missed by his survivors, which include his wife and best friend for 65 years, Helen; daughter, Judith (former son-in-law, James Swanson) of Racine, granddaughter, Kara, husband, Washington Taylor IV, and great-granddaughter, Lucia of Newton, Mass., and granddaughter, Ieva, husband, Timothy Holy, and great-granddaughter, Kendra of Somerville, Mass.; daughter, Carol (Kurt Vander Ploeg) of Pella, Iowa, and granddaughters, Andrea of Pella, Iowa, Melinda (Colin Fallon) of Elkton, Md., Karin (Jason Booth) of Iowa City, Iowa and Chicago, Ill., and Jana of Ames, Iowa; daughter, Laura (Robert Watson) of Chicago, Ill., and grandsons, Anders of Amherst, Mass. and Brendan at home; and daughter, Martha (John Peterson) of Appleton, and granddaughters, Maren of Grinnell, Iowa and Emily at home. Also surviving are a niece, Patricia (George Hess) of Novato, Calif.; nephew, Charles (Nancy) Tiedje of Pompano Beach, Fla.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Anton; two sisters, Ruth Tiedje and Helen; and a granddaughter, Kirsten Swanson. A private family service was held on Wednesday, November 25, 1998. The family will celebrate Dr. Hemwall's life with family and friends at a Memorial service to be held at Calvary Church, 931 West Lake Street, Oak Park, Ill. on January 9, 1999, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Medical Assistance Programs International - Central American Relief Fund, P.O.
