Change licensing requirements

I believe totally on the more restriction of the driving school, where a 16-year-old will need to practice more on night driving. I also believe that they should be practicing 70 percent on daytime driving as well as nighttime, equally.

Not all accidents happen at night. Children drive carelessly, when they get their license, and I think it might be better off if students don't get their license until their 18, but that's just my advice.

I think they should get their license revoked when they speed the first time because they can injure someone or even kill someone the second time as well the first.

It could be a toddler, it could be a 10-year-old, or it could be an adult. They should have insurance always. If they can't afford insurance, they do not need to drive. And if they do not have the time to practice more, they do not need to drive.

Too bad if they work too much, or they're busy; they should make time or they have no right driving at 16. I also think they shouldn't have more than three people in the car, unless its grown-ups, but if it is children, there should only be two or three people allowed in the car. If the children don't like it, they shouldn't be asking for such a big responsibility to drive. It is simple as that

A look at mayoral race

After reading the Journal this week about the mayoral candidates, does there really have to be an election? First Jeffrey Metz doesn't know if he worked for the city or county last year. Then we have Charles McCormick that feels you solve everything by just killing anyone who has a problem with you. Now we have Mayor Smith who has peacefully handled all situations while in office and he does know he works as City Mayor and is doing an excellent job. Need we waste all this money on a campaign and election when we know who the best candidate is? There is no competition Mayor Smith. Keep up the excellent work. You're doing a great job.

Oliver production is wonderful

How lucky can we get? Thank you for the wonderful production of ``Oliver" by the Racine Theatre Guild.

The entire cast performed like professionals. Mike Gastaldi, the sixth-grader from Bullen School, is outstanding as Oliver. He did a wonderful job! The rest of the youngsters were great too.

The singing and dancing were flawless. Another holiday gift was the musical play presented by the Racine Assembly of God. The clever set designs, the living Christmas tree, the angels ``descending from heaven" were all fabulous.

All the hard work by the cast and crew was evident by the successful and enjoyable performances.

We are so lucky we don't need to travel to Chicago or Milwaukee since we have all this talent right in our backyard. Congratulations to you all on a job well done.

Stereotyping is unfair

I do not intend to get into a running dispute with Carmen Cermak. But she has accused me in her 12 /10 /98 letter of not answering issues raised by her letters. Those issues are, according to her 1½7 /98 letter, ``the insulting, sexist, coercive, and violent nature of the anti-choice movement."

I never intended to answer those issues because in such name calling, she has attempted to stereotype a movement she has no other way to fight. The pro-life movement is comprised of hundreds of thousands of men and women of very different backgrounds, races, creeds, political persuasion and nationalities. A movement this diverse cannot be stereotyped.

Of course there are some fruitcakes in a movement this size. Are there none in hers? Are all pro-choicers guilty by association of the crimes of these fruit cakes? Of course not. And most pro-lifers are not guilty of the crimes she mentions either.

I am also upset with the label she has pasted on us. We are not the ``anti-choice" movement. We are the pro-life movement. Would she like to be identified as anti-life?

Impeachment is inappropriate

The president should not be impeached. He has done nothing that comes close to what the Constitution states as reasons for impeachment.

The hate for the president from the right has finally been able to infect Washington. I'm sure the Christian right, which is neither Christian or right, is celebrating. Congressman Barr and his cronies are slapping themselves on the back and saying, ``Job well done."

We are the laughingstock of the world. Not because of what Mr. Clinton has done, but by how we have reacted to it.

There are terrorists bombing buildings. Countries are on the verge of war, and a collection of pious, self-righteous, holier-than-thou, sanctimonious hypocrites are on the brink of taking our country down a road. A road we may have a hard time coming back from.

I do not condone lying. The president should have his day in court. Although when I apply what I call the Henry Hyde Lied Test, the president passes with flying colors.

America, wake up. We live in an exceptional, first-rate country. Do not let a collection of despicable snakes in the grass destroy it.

Don't mar the holiday

December is the Holiday Month! It is the time when we gather with our family and friends to celebrate the birth of Christ and greet each other joyfully!

We don't want anything to mar this ``special" time of the year. Alcohol-related accidents usually peak during this holiday season, when more people are drinking and driving. That is why the U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, designates December as Drunk and Drugged Prevention month.

Alcoholism costs Wisconsin $3 billion per year in accidents, health care and lost productivity. At $611 per person, Wisconsin ranks fifth highest nationally in the costs of alcohol abuse.

In Wisconsin, one person is injured or killed every 68 minutes in an alcohol related vehicle crash.

Make a commitment to avoid alcohol, if you are driving. Don't let guests drive after drinking alcohol.

Never serve alcohol to someone under 21.

Remember to keep the joy in the season, ``Modeling" the behavior you wish youth to do, can be the best teacher of all! You become a person who builds assets in our community, our youth and our families. It may be the best gift you give.
