Racine woman serves as chocolate ambassador

Dorothy Holmes of Racine makes quite a trip when she visits her daughter, Catherine.

Catherine has been a missionary teacher at the Woodstock School in Mussoori, India, for the past 25 years.

Before heading off to India, Catherine, a Park High School graduate, first taught school a few years at Janes Elementary School. Her next stop was Bogota, Columbia, before heading to India.

But this story isn't about Catherine. It's about her mother and her annual visit to India.

Dorothy first flies to Amsterdam. Then, she flies to Delhi before a climb to Mussoori, all the while toting the ingredients she will need to make her chocolate during her India stay.

Dorothy is a proficient candy-maker and usually makes between 50 and 80 pounds of chocolates each year.

She makes the candy a couple of times per week. (Please see photo below.)

The candy she makes in India is sold at the school's annual fundraiser and is quite a hit with the local population.

No sale was held this year so the townspeople were treated to Easter baskets featuring Dorothy's candies.

Making candy in this rural town is quite a feat as Dorothy often has to deal with sporadic electrical service and water stoppages. Her tool-of-her-trade is her reliable electric skillet where she melts the chocolates.

Her last visit was shorter because her great-granddaughter was graduating from high school back in the United States.

Dorothy's not sure when her next trip to India. Her health isn't what it used to be and she's not sure she'd be able to make the climb up to Mussoori.

She takes comfort in the fact her daughter will be visiting Racine in the next month.

Party with a purpose

The employees at Arrow Heating & Air Conditioning, 3026 Phillips Ave., did what a lot of people do this time of year hold a holiday party.

The party, held at Arrow employee Candy Ruffalo's home, was to be potluck. Besides bringing a dish to pass, all attending the event were to bring items of clothing to donate to the REST program.

The REST program offers shelter to homeless people at local churches on a rotating basis from October through April.

More than a dozen Arrow employees joined in the fun and collected nearly a pickup truckload of items to donate to REST. Not only did they collect much needed clothes but personal care products and toys also were donated.

Some of the donations also went to the Women's Horizon, a women's shelter in Kenosha. Ruffalo and her son Nicholas, 5, recently made the welcomed deliveries.

This was a spur of the moment event and the first time Arrow employees hosted such a party, but all agreed it was a worthwhile and fun event.

They have already planned to do this again next year.

Fete for Big Brothers /Big Sisters

Art Wilks and Bob Marques of Racine, decided to host a Christmas party where all guests were to bring wrapped children's gifts as admission.

When neighbor Tom Johnson heard the idea, he suggested Big Brothers /Big Sisters as the recipients of the holiday donations.

More than 100 gifts were donated to the Big Brothers /Big Sisters' annual Christmas party.

Donations of toys also were dropped off by employees of local businesses including; Boston Store, Total Furniture, Pub on Wisconsin and Furniture Clearance Center of Porters. Racine County Project Emergency helped with food for the party.

The event was held at the Racine Labor Center earlier this month where every child received a gift.

There were lots of smiling faces as Santa who I'm told bore a striking resemblance to Tom Berger of Project Emergency made a visit to the kids.

Have a safe and happy holiday!
