Holmgren's wife hints toward life after Lambeau

By By
Tuesday, December 22, 1998 3:00 AM CST

by Gery Woelfel the Journal Times

It wasn't unlike any of the other post-game press conferences Kathy Holmgren has attended at Lambeau Field the last seven years.

Following the Packers' 30-22 victory over Tennessee Sunday, Kathy found her customary spot along the wall and waited patiently with the media for her husband to arrive.

And when Mike Holmgren made his entrance, he, as he's traditionally done, immediately acknowledged her, pointing a finger at her. Kathy, as usual, returned a warm smile.

For the next 20 minutes or so, Kathy listened intently as her husband responded to a wide-range of questions, including ones about Reggie White, the Packers' marvelous defensive end who supposedly played his last game at Lambeau Field.

But was this Holmgren's last game as Packers coach at Lambeau as well?

As Kathy began to leave the press room, an inquisitive reporter couldn't help but notice her forlorn look. The Packers had won, but Kathy Holmgren's face didn't reflect it.

Asked if this, too, was her husband's farewell game in Green Bay, Kathy Holmgren softly and politely said, ``We don't like to talk about that."

But with her husband's future so much up in the air, didn't the thought cross her mind?

``Yes, we thought about it," Holmgren said, her voice barely audible and tinged with sadness. ``We like coming to Lambeau. ... We've been in this situation before."

That situation was in 1992 when Mike, a native of San Francisco and assistant coach for the 49ers, decided to move his family to Green Bay. Now, Holmgren faces another major decision: whether to move his family again to pursue his dream of being a coach and general manager.

Asked what was running through her mind Sunday, Kathy Holmgren said, ``Like everyone else, we're just savoring the moment."

She could barely get those words out. It was amply apparent Kathy Holmgren was doing her best to keep her emotions in check. Just how emotional, the reporter asked, was this moment for her?

``Very," Holmgren said. ``Very."

She then walked out the door. I sensed she wasn't ever coming back, at least for another Mike Holmgren post-game press conference.

Karl makes an assist

When the Milwaukee Bucks hired George Karl last summer, they landed one of basketball's premier coaches. They also acquired one civic-minded person.

For while Karl has been checking out college talent and looking at more film than Siskel and Ebert during this ludicrous lockout, he's also been meeting with officials from the Milwaukee Boys and Girls Club and the United Way.

What Karl wants to do is create a program for local hgh school student-athletes. He wants to help them with their problems, be it academic or domestic.

Karl already has such program in place in Seattle, where he previously coached. It's called ``Friends of Hoop," and it has been a smashing success. It's been successful in large measure to Karl's generosity. Reluctantly, Karl admitted his financial contributions to ``Friends of Hoop" are in six figures. Karl's agent, Brett Adams, said his client's estimate was conservative.

``Once I started making so much money, I felt guilty," Karl said. ``I felt like giving something back. Basketball's been very good to me. And by doing this, I get to stay in touch with the kids, high school coaches and get into gyms where I feel most comfortable."

Telling it like it is

It would have been easy for Sean Jones to call White the greatest defensive end he's ever seen. After all, Jones was posed the question of who was the best defensive end in the Packers' locker room after Sunday's game at Lambeau Field. What's more, Jones was once a teammate of White's, and they're still friends.

But Jones, a financier and agent based in Los Angeles, didn't let his friendship taint his objectivity.

``Reggie isn't on a level by himself," Jones said. ``There have been two guys, two defensive ends, in my era who stood above the rest, although for different reasons. For sheer power and sheer athleticism, it's Reggie. For sheer athleticism and grace, it's Bruce Smith (of the Buffalo Bills)."

Brandon may set sail

If the NBA decides to blow off this season, not all players are going to be sitting around moping.

Bucks point guard Terrell Brandon has discussed heading to Spain or Greece, and not just to sightsee.

``We've talked about that, about Terrell playing overseas," said Bill Duffy, Brandon's agent. ``If the season is canceled, he's very receptive to doing that."

Duffy, by the way, also represents Michael Olowokandi, the No. 1 overall pick in last June's draft. There's an even greater possibility Olowokandi will be catching a trans-Atlantic flight.

Said Duffy: ``His bags are already half-packed.'

Interested coach

Maybe the biggest factor in Kurtis Doerr's decision to sign a national letter of intent to play football for the University of Oregon is Ducks coach Mike Bellotti.

``He's one of the few coaches in the country who works directly with punters; he really likes the kicking game," said Doerr, a graduate of Waterford High School who spent the last two seasons at Glendale (Ariz.) Community College. ``It's really rare for a head coach to care about kickers."

It is, indeed. But Doerr, who averaged 44.6 yards a punt last season, hopes Bellotti can improve his punting as much as he did with current Ducks punter Josh Bidwell. Bidwell went from averaging 36.3 yards as a freshman to 45.8 yards this season as a senior in earning AP All-America second-team honors.

Par for the course

Let's see, the St. Louis Cardinals have Mark McGwire at first base; McGwire hit a mere 70 homers and drove in 147 runs last season.

The Houston Astros have Jeff Bagwell at first; He hit 34 homers and drove in 111 runs.

The Milwaukee Brewers' new first baseman is Sean Berry. He'll be 33 on opening day; he'll be with his fourth major-league team (Kansas City, Montreal and Houston being the others), he played in just 102 games last season and hit 57 fewer homers than McGwire.

Brewers season-ticket callers are standing by.

Around the horn

UW standouts Aaron Gibson and Tom Burke are cinches to get phone calls on the first day of the NFL draft. Don't be surprised if fullback Cecil Martin gets one on the second day. ... Former MU shooting guard Robb Logterman has taken up residence in Burlington. ... Kodak moments: Packers wide receiver Derrick Mayes holding his helmet high above his head in saluting White as he circled Lambeau Field after the game. Tackle Gilbert Brown fighting back tears while talking about White. ... NBA commish Davey Stern sure has his priorities in order; instead of working on a way to end a six-month labor dispute, which he more than anyone instigated, he's gone on a vacation. Funny how most observers are outraged by the exorbitant amount of money NBA players make but hardly grumble about Stern's $8 million-a-year contract. ... From the hard-to-believe department: Former Packers and current Miami cornerback Terrell Buckley has eight interceptions, the most in the NFL. ... I'm sure the same committee of geniuses who were rounded up by UW coach Barry Alvarez to advise /persuade Ron Dayne to bypass the NFL draft were the same geniuses who talked Racine's Brent Moss into staying another season.

Most of the time, though, I appreciate his total lack of concern. It means that when I boil some pasta, open a can and dump its contents on top, my husband is pleased to call that dinner.

So I am not complaining. My husband may not cook, but it's nice how he thinks I'm wonderful when I do.
