Upcoming elections to feature key races

RACINE COUNTY -- The deadline for filing to run in local governments' spring elections passed Tuesday, revealing several contentious races throughout the county.

Among the highest profile races, four people filed papers to run for the Racine County Executive's office being vacated by incumbent Jean Jacobson. And in Racine, four candidates filed to oppose incumbent Mayor Jim Smith.

Primary elections for races countywide will be held on Feb. 18. The general election is April 1.

In Mount Pleasant, Town Board member Mark Gleason is opposing incumbent Town Chairman Joe Clementi, while Gleason will be opposed by former town police officer Tom Prochaska.

Caledonia Chairman Susan Greenfield is facing a rematch with Town Board member Ron Coutts to lead the town. Three candidates will vie for the seat vacated by Larry McCalvy, including McCalvy's wife, Wendy.

On the Racine Unified School Board, six candidates, including two incumbents, will run for three open spots. Long-time board member David Hazen declined to run for another term, guaranteeing at least one new face on the board.

In western Racine County, there is high interest in races in locales where politics took center stage last year.

In the Town of Burlington, Chairman Gerald "Twinkles" Kaul faces a Feb. 18 primary with three other candidates, including past Town Board candidate Jeff Kraschnewski.

A unique situation has developed in the Town of Dover, where Larry Neau is running for both chairman and the supervisor No. 1 position he currently holds.

Town Clerk/Treasurer Merry Kris Demske said that she checked with the State Elections Board to see if it was legal for Neau to run for two positions.

For the chairman's post, Neau will be in the runoff Feb. 18 with incumbent Thomas Lembcke and Patrick Haley. The top two vote-getters advance to the general election. Neau is being challenged by John Hauper for his supervisor position on the April ballot.

In the often contentious Town of Raymond, a Feb. 18 primary is planned for the Supervisor No. 1 post now held by Joe Bergles. Chairman Alan Jasperson will get a bye in the primary, but will be challenged in April by Norman Anderson, a member of the Planning Commission.

While no discontent has been readily apparent in the Union Grove, the decision of incumbent Village President Mike Leider not to seek re-election has drawn the interest of three men interested in taking over for him, including current Trustee Giles Williams, who is also administrator of the grade school district. Also running are former Assistant Fire Chief Patrick Stevens and Robert Orrie, a member of the Water and Wastewater Commission.

A final day filing by local Realtor and physician assistant Jack Baker means there will also be a three-way primary for the Second District aldermanic post in the City of Burlington now held by Robert Miller, the council president. Also running is hardware clerk Chuck Rule.

A primary is also scheduled for the Supervisor No. 2 Post in the Town of Rochester, a post now held by Nancy Klemko.
