Her Halloween spirit is a fun one
By Phyllis Sides
RACINE — The rain didn't dampen Deidre Enriquez's Halloween spirit Sunday afternoon. She still dispensed candy from the coffin standing on end in her front yard at 4206 21st St.
The coffin is the newest addition to her collection of Halloween lawn ornaments, which includes gargoyles, skulls, crosses and gravestones. Enriquez, 33, has been decorating her yard and dressing up for Halloween for about 15 years.
"I enjoy doing it for the kids," she said. "My kids think I'm whacked out.
"But I say you only live once and if I can put a smile on someone's face, then I will."
Brandi Enriquez thinks her mom's cool.
"All my friends love my mom. They think she's the greatest," Brandi said.
Jared Froze, 3, and his sister, Valerie, 1½, weren't afraid as they walked up to the coffin and waited patiently as the lid opened to reveal Enriquez with a bowl of candy.
Dressed in a purple dragon suit, Jared explored Enriquez's yard, looking at a rubber inflatable skeleton. Despite the gloomy weather, they came trick-or-treating anyway, said his mother, Catherine Froze.
"We came for the kids," she said. "It's not that cold."
The idea for the coffin came to Enriquez a couple of weeks ago when she and a neighbor were talking. It took about a week to build it, paint it and attach the hardware.
"We were sitting outside with neighbor one night when the weather was nice at a bonfire and we decided to do it," Enriquez said.
