History of Rolling Thunder

The name "Rolling Thunder" has taken on many meanings. Here are a few:

"How Great Thou Art" The original reference is to the popular Christian hymn, "How Great Thou Art." The lyrics include:

"I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder/ Thy power throughout the universe displayed."

Vietnam War Operation Rolling Thunder was the code name for bombing campaign in North Vietnam. The 3-year campaign is the longest non-stop aerial campaign in military history.


POW/MIA Rolling Thunder is the name of an organization founded in 1987 dedicated to bringing attention to POWs and MIA in Vietnam. The organization is perhaps best known for its annual motorcycle rally on Memorial Day weekend. Rolling Thunder chapters have formed throughout the country.

South Africa "Rolling Thunder" was the name of coordinated anti-apartheid rallies in South Africa.

Saturday in Milwaukee WISDOM, a statewide coalition of congregation-based organizations, is holding a Rolling Thunder demonstration in Milwaukee on Saturday. An estimated 6,000 people are expected to attend, including several people from Racine County. Similar demonstrations are planned throughout the country.
