How to help Hurricane Katrina survivors
By Journal Times staff
The Journal Times profiled the Dave Schmidt family of Racine in Sunday's paper. Hurricane Katrina's massive winds and rain have left Schmidt's son, Shawn Morris, who is on active duty in the Air Force, and his son's new family without much in the way of clothes, money or a home.
It's now up to Schmidt and his family in Racine to cover the costs for family members down South. Schmidt is on disability because of cancer and other medical conditions, and money is tight.
That's why Dave and his wife are trying to set up a fund to raise money to care for their daughter-in-law and grandchildren once they get here. They also need money and supplies to send to them in Alabama to tide them over down there.
People wanting to give suggestions or help to the Schmidt family can contact Dave at:dschmidt48@wi.rr.com Check this list if you'd like to find another way to help. Whether you patronize a business that's donating money to the relief effort or donate money yourself, just remember - any little bit helps.
Check with your church or with local civic organizations for other opportunities to help. Many are adopting people in the Gulf Coast area or know of people locally affected by Hurricane Katrina.
ShapeXpress, 4915 Washington Ave., will donate all proceeds from the September sales of bottled water to the American Red Cross Katrina relief efforts. Diane and Art Hansen, owners of the women's fitness club, is also encouraging its members to donate money for Katrina relief efforts while working out and they will match whatever is donated. Call (262) 619-1740 for more information.
Southeastern Wisconsin's Subway Stores will aid in relief efforts by donating a portion of store sales on Sept. 10. On that day, $1 from each submarine sandwich sold at Subway stores will be donated to the American Red Cross.
Roundy's Supermarkets, working with Second Harvest Food Bank, placed collection barrels at Pick 'n Save stores in the greater Milwaukee area. An effort to coordinate a plan for Roundy's stores outside the Milwaukee area is ongoing.
People can also contribute money at Pick `n Save stores by telling the cashier how much they would like to donate. That amount will appear on their bill and be given weekly to the Red Cross, to be sent to the Gulf Coast. Customer receipts will show the purchase as a charitable contribution for tax purposes.
Caledonia's St. Rita School students and staff will offer New Orleans-style Mardi Gras beads in their school colors to any adult or child who donates at least $1 to the disaster relief fund at the school. The fundraiser will begin Sept. 6 and continue through September. Funds collected will go directly to Hurricane Katrina assistance.
Local artist Lee Crawford has developed a shirt to raise funds for the New Orleans Red Cross. Visit

The Union Grove Elementary School JASON Project students will collect donations for the Red Cross until September 16. Money donations are being collected at the school office at 1745 Milldrum St. in Union Grove. Checks may be written to the American Red Cross. All donations received by the JASON project will go directly to the American Red Cross.
The students traveled to southern Louisiana in January to study the area's culture, history, ecosystems, water quality and wetlands wildlife. They spent a week doing research in the New Orleans area and on the Gulf Coast. The disaster that followed Hurricane Katrina is a personal concern for these students. The JASON Project is an after-school science program at UGES. Bob Ballard is the founder and chief scientist in this science program for children.
McAuliffe's Pub, 3700 Meachem Road, will donate the proceeds from its "Halfway to St. Pat's Day" party on Sept. 17 to hurricane relief. Music will start at 8 p.m. with "Carved in Half" (an offshoot of the Sandcarvers) opening the show, followed by the Steel Bonnets. Cover charge is yet to be determined.
