RACINE - Tens of thousands of people are expected to line Racine's Main Street on Tuesday for the Fourth Fest Parade, one of the community's proudest traditions.

In preparation for the big day, we interviewed Sgt. Steve Madsen about some parade-watching basics, from when you can reserve a spot to how you can stay safe.

When can I reserve a spot along the parade route?

At 5 a.m., same as it's been since 1993. Anyone who comes out earlier can receive a fine.

Where can I reserve a seat?

Anywhere on the area from the sidewalk to the curb, even if it's in front of someone's house. Stay out of the street, though, Madsen said. Some of the marching bands and other displays march from curb to curb, which could be dangerous for small children walking in their path.

When does the parade start?

At 9 a.m. Pre-parade starts at 8:15 a.m.

What is the parade route?

The parade steps off at Goold and Main streets and continues along Main Street to 14th Street. The parade ends at 14th Street and Grand Avenue.

What does this mean for traffic?

City police will shut down traffic along the route at about 7:30 a.m. Main Street should reopen sometime between 11 a.m. and noon, depending on where you are on the parade route.

Where will police be along the route?

Officers will be at every intersection from 7:30 until the street sweepers pass.

Will first aid be available?

Yes. If you or someone you know needs first aid, contact a police officer. Volunteers will be riding on golf carts along the parade route with emergency medical kits. For more serious incidents, ambulances will be available to respond.

Can I drink alcohol along the route?

Yes. But police will be looking for, and citing, underage drinkers, Madsen said.

Can I bike along the parade route?

No. You can't ride your skateboard or scooter, either.
