Local colleges: Rangers rebound with win

The UW-Parkside men's soccer team, which was knocked out of first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference after a 1-0 loss to Northern Kentucky Friday, rebounded Sunday with a 5-0 GLVC victory over Bellarmine at the Wood Road Soccer Field in Somers.
"The post-game feeling is so much better after a quality performance," Parkside coach Rick Kilps said after the Rangers improved to 9-2-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the GLVC. "We needed a solid rebound from Friday's poor showing and we got it."
Bojan Jovicic scored at 4:40 into the match off assists by Renaldo Vega and Josh Lechusz, giving Parkside a 1-0 lead that lasted into the second half. At 59:19, Andy Gamarra scored off an assist from Jovicic to give Parkside a 2-0 lead.
Karl Ostby, Mike Schuster and Johnson Thao also scored in the second half for the Rangers.
"We got back to doing some of the things we were doing early in the season," Kilps said. "Our pressure on the Bellarmine defense created excellent opportunities for us."
The Rangers outshot Bellarmine 12-2, including 9-0 in the second half.
Women's soccer UW-PARKSIDE: Laura Eide and Megan Haberlein each scored goals in the Rangers' 2-0 GLVC victory over Bellarmine Sunday at Wood Road Field in Somers.
Haberlein scored an unassisted goal at the 23:10 mark. Eide made it 2-0 with a goal at 47:50, assisted by Nicole Curran.
Erica Higuchi has two saves for Parkside (8-4-1, 7-2-1 GLVC), which outshot Bellarmine 6-2.
Amanda Moore had both shots on goal for Bellarmine (7-4, 6-3 GLVC).
CARTHAGE: Jacqueline Peterson scored twice in the first half in Carthage's 8-0 nonconference victory over St. Norbert College Sunday at Art Keller Field in Kenosha.
Peterson scored 2:15 into the game, Shannon Chesna scored at 3:45 and Peterson scored again at 28:08 for the Lady Reds (7-3) for a 3-0 lead. Lauren Landem (37:00) and Andrea Jacobsen (41:00) also scored in the first half as Carthage took a 5-0 lead against the Green Knights (4-3).
The Lady Reds added three goals in the second half: Peterson scored at 51:00, Angela Wojtanek at 76:00 and Edita Emini at 85:00.
It was the third straight shutout for the Lady Reds.
Men's golf UW-PARKSIDE: Corey Sell, Mike Keller and Paul Swart each shot 5-over-par 77s, leading UW-Parkside to the championship Saturday in the seven-team Lawrence University Invitational.
The Rangers had a team score of 312, finishing one stroke ahead of Knox College.
Parkside's low scores came from players who entered the tournament as individuals. Red-shirt freshman Eric Shields finished in a tie for second with a 75. Senior Josh Meyer was one shot behind with a 76.
Andrew Brodek, a Horlick graduate who entered as an individual for Beloit College, tied for 34th with an 87.
CARTHAGE: The Red Men finished their fall season by finishing second at the two-day Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational at the Washington County Golf Course in Hartford.
Edgewood College won the 14-team tournament with a score of 619, four strokes ahead of Carthage.
Scott Hood of Carthage won medalist honors with a 74-77-151, winning in a playoff against Daniel Behm of Wisconsin Lutheran (74-77-151).
Tyler Wollberg was sixth at 77-77-154 and Matt Carr tied for seventh at 76-77-151.
Women's golf CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds moved up to ninth in the Millikin University Invitational at the Red Tail Run Golf Club in Decatur, Ill., shooting a 351 Sunday to finish at 742. Illinois Wesleyan won the 17-team tournament with a 632.
Carey Cappel of Illinois Wesleyan earned medalist honors with a 148 (76-72).
Carthage was led by Chelsea Kater, who tied for 28th at 178 (97-81). Shanna Agner tied for 42nd at 187 (97-90) and Becky Volkman tied for 50th at 189 (100-89).
