Local colleges: Parkside men come up short

The UW-Parkside men's basketball team ran into a buzzsaw Friday night.

Making a four-hour road trip Friday afternoon to play defending WIAA Division II champion and No. 1-ranked Winona State, the Rangers lost 92-76 in a nonconference game. Winona State extended its winning streak to 33 games.

Parkside pulled to within 38-37 on a layup by St. Catherine's High School graduate LaVontay Fenderson with 19:10 remaining in the second half, but Winona State gradually started pulling away.

"In the second half, they made a run on us and we couldn't get a big stop," Parkside coach Luke Reigel said. "We'd score and they'd come right back and score. Then they got a couple stops when they were putting runs together.

"When they made a run on us tonight, we just got away from what we've been doing well all year - being patient and getting good shots."

David Johnson scored a game-high 20 points off the bench and Zach Malvik added 17 points to lead a balanced Warriors attack.

Both teams were about even in several categories, with Winona State having a 33-32 edge in field goals, a 44-39 lead in rebounding and an 18-16 lead in steals. Both teams committed 15 turnovers.

One major difference was free throws. Winona State went 19-for-29 from the free-throw line and Parkside was just 7-for-13.

Parkside (9-5) also featured a balanced scoring attack, with five players scoring in double figures. Burlington graduate Brad Ferstenou and Tyrone Deacon each had 16 points, Kyle Clark added 15, Fenderson had 12 and Juan Lopez finished with 11.

Women's basketball CARTHAGE 99, LYNCHBURG 63: The Lady Reds certainly weren't out of sync after an 11-day layoff. Carthage jumped out to a 22-0 lead at the 14:51 mark and went on to beat Lynchburg by 32 points in the opening round of the Smokey Ballenger Classic at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. Carthage will play Otterbein in the championship today. Otterbein beat Carnegie Mellon 99-63 in the other first-round game.

The 22 unanswered points at the start of the game are a Carthage school record.

Kristina Dredge scored eight of her 10 points in the opening 22-0 run. Jessie Bridge finally got the Hornets (2-4) on the board at 12:16 with a pair of free throws.

Shana Lieberman led the Lady Reds (6-3) with 16 points, including three 3-pointers. Erika Buchholz and Katie Jarger added 11 points each.

Lynchburg scored nine unanswered points at the close of the first half and scored the first basket of the second half to pull within 16, but Carthage went back up by 23 points (48-25) with 16:48 left after a basket by Buchholz.
