Election filings: Ken Hall to challenge McReynolds

RACINE COUNTY - Relatively speaking, Racine Mayor Gary Becker will get a free ride this spring.

No one stepped forward to challenge the one-term incumbent as the election filing period closed on Wednesday evening.

Racine County Executive Bill McReynolds, however, will face a challenge.

Racine County Board Supervisor Ken Hall, a financial and legislative consultant, filed papers on Wednesday to run against McReynolds.

"New leadership is needed to help Racine County make investments that foster growth and to balance priorities in ways that ensure funding for quality of life, commuter rail, and other vital infrastructure," Hall said in a news release.

In announcing his candidacy, Hall said it was frustrating to see government make long-term choices without the kind of preparation that is routine in the private sector. Compared to Racine, counties like Kenosha held down property taxes more, sustained human services, and avoided major staff cuts over the past four years, he said.

The general election is set for April 3.

In races that require a paring down of the field - four people are running for town chairman in the Town of Burlington, for example - the primary election will be Feb. 20.

It's possible some last-minute filings may not be included in this list. Municipalities that were closed on Tuesday extended their filing deadlines through 5 p.m.Wednesday.
