Lady Reds run away with victory

The Carthage women's basketball team ran away from Aurora University Wednesday night at Kenosha.

The Lady Reds used 14-0 and 11-1 runs during the first half to break open the nonconference game and win 63-43.

Carthage (7-4), which forced 31 turnovers, trailed 12-11 with 14:15 left in the first half when momentum switched. Erika Buchholz scored on a layup and Lauren Johnston hit a 3-pointer for a 16-12 lead.

The Lady Reds kept the run going with three Lisa Gartelos free throws and a 3-pointer from Katie Klemke. Shana Lieberman's layup with 8:45 left capped the 14-0 run which gave Carthage a 25-12 lead.


Aurora (6-4) chipped away, cutting the lead to 25-17. But The Lady Reds' went on another offensive surge led by 3-pointers from Carlie Janowiak and Gartelos for a 38-18 lead with 3:51 left in the half.

Carthage's offense remained strong in the second half, pushing the lead to 43-23.

Aurora chipped away again and pulled within 50-37 with 7:07 left. Carthage put the game away with a 13-2 run for a 63-39 lead with 1:13 left.


Kristina Dredge led the Lady Reds' offense with 15 points. Katie Jarger had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Buchholz scored 10 points.
