School Board filings: Interest lacking in Waterford school race

Waterford - As of Thursday, it looked like no one would run for the three open seats on the Waterford Graded School District board.

None of the School Board's three incumbents filed papers on time, so the district extended the filing deadline to 5 p.m. today.

Only three Racine County school boards have competitive races this spring - Racine Unified School District, Union Grove Union High School and the Burlington Area School District, where a 17-year-old high school student has filed papers to run for one of the district's three open seats.

Taylor Wishau will be the youngest candidate running in any school board race in Racine County, possibly the state's youngest candidate for any election. Wishau, a senior at Burlington High School, turns 18 on April 3, the day of the spring election.

"It could be a nice present," Wishau said.

Wishau said he has been interested in politics since the sixth grade and would like to take the seat on the School Board once occupied by his uncle, Mike Hurst, who served two terms before resigning.

Wishau will compete against three incumbents for the three open seats on the school board.

The spring election will be held Tuesday, April 3. There will be no primary election for any county school board race.

The following people have filed for candidacy in spring school board elections. Unless otherwise noted, school board members serve 3-year terms.
