UW-Parkside sophomore Jessica Lamp charged to the front in the final 100 meters in both the mile run and 800 run and won both events Saturday at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Track Championships held at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind.

Lamp led a 1-2 Parkside finish in both events. Lamp won the mile in 4:58.54 and the 800 in 2:14.14. Teammate Naomi Fulton, a junior, was second in the mile in 4:58.84 and second in the 800 in 2:15.46. Teammate Jill Winkler, a senior, was fourth in the mile (5:09.43) and sixth in the 800 (2:20.60).

Lamp, Fulton and Winkler teamed with freshman Jessica Enderby on the 4x400 relay that placed third in 4:04.46.

Those four accounted for 50 of the Rangers' 73 points in Parkside's third-place finish in the team standings. It was the highest finish for Parkside at the GLVC indoor championships. SIU-Edwardsville won the meet with 220.5 points and Indianapolis was second with 187, followed by Parkside (73) and Lewis (66).

Parkside's other big points came from junior Valerie Kelly's victory in the 5,000 run. Kelly lapped the entire field en route to winning the event in 17:40.01, falling less than a second short of the GLVC indoor record and 7-10 seconds short of improving her NCAA Division II provisional mark which would put her in a strong position for a berth in the NCAA Division II championships.

"Running 25 laps in a race by yourself is a difficult task for anyone," Parkside coach Mike DeWitt said of Kelly's performance. "Valerie did a great job of running at her best by herself."

Freshman Melissa Nilles, the former Burlington High School standout, added points with a third-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 3.26 meters (10 feet, 8 1/4 inches). Parkside's distance medley team of Enderby, Emily Junion, Mandy Murray and Laura Braunreiter was fourth in 12:51.90 and the same group placed seventh in the 4x200 relay in 1:58.34.

"Jessica Lamp, Naomi Fulton and Jill Winkler did an exceptional job of racing controlled over the first half of each event, closing out each race with a flurry, each race was a little better as the day wore on," DeWitt said. It was a lot of fun watching this group in particular, but every one of the 10 athletes we had in the meet competed well. We did a great job of maximizing our scoring opportunities."

On the men's side, senior Brendan Kelly scored all of the Rangers' 11 points, leading Parkside to a tie with Northern Kentucky for the final spot in the team standings.

Kelly was third in the 200-meter hurdles (24.85 seconds) and fourth in the 400 dash (49.57).

"Brendan has done a very good job all indoor season," Parkside men's coach Lucian Rosa said. "He is at his best ever as we head into the outdoor season, where he will be working primarily at the 400 hurdle event. He has the ability to work into the national meet finals come May."

A communication major who has been named to the dean's list three times, Jorwic earned CCIW all-academic honors in 2005.

Jorwick cites an autistic younger brother as her main motivation for helping others, particularly special needs children. She's been involved in the "Cure Autism Now Walk" and participated in Carthage's "Character Counts" interactive leadership development program. Jorwic also was instrumental in organizing the Carthage Sports and Activity Center's annual community service event "Bowling for Kid's Sake," which raised nearly $4,000 for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Kenosha. Jorwic also coaches boys and girls for the FC United Soccer Club.
