The Carthage College men's baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a double error by State University of New York-Cortland third baseman Steve Nickel, but that's all the runs the Red Men got in a 6-2 loss to SUNY-Cortland at the Port Charlotte Sports Complex in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Carthage, ranked eighth in the American Baseball Coaches Association Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III preseason poll, is off to its worst spring-trip start (3-4) since coach Augie Schmidt's 1990 team started 0-3.

SUNY-Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Carthage took its 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first.

The Red Dragons (7-0) tied the game in the second inning and took a 4-2 lead in the third, adding single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Carthage committed five errors and managed only four hits.

Red Men starter Ryan Roufus (0-1) pitched five innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks. Roufus struck out six.
