Local colleges: Husing, Livek pitch in for Red Men in sweep

The Carthage College baseball team got a pair of complete games from pitchers Jacob Husing and Jeff Livek and swept its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin season opener Saturday, beating North Central 6-4 and 6-1 in a doubleheader at Naperville, Ill.
In the first game, North Central scored three runs in the first inning off Husing, but he allowed just one run the rest of the way. The Red Men took the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning. Boe Baitinger tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch. Tyler Yapp hit an RBI double, Mike Hughes had an RBI single and Tyler Creekmore had an RBI fielder's choice. Yapp went 3-for-4 and Husing struck out eight.
In the nightcap, Livek pitched a four-hitter, allowing a single run in the second inning, and struck out a career-high 12 batters. The Red Men (9-6, 2-0 CCIW) scored all their runs in the final six innings. Leading 2-1 after five innings, Carthage scored two runs in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Baitinger and Chris Shannon. Seth Romano went 3-for-4 for the Red Men.
Parkside (12-14, 7-9 GLVC) scored single runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-1 lead before Missouri-St. Louis rallied. A.J. Marquardt went 2-for-3 for the Rangers.
n Saturday night, Parkside lost to the Rivermen 5-4 on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning.
UW-PARKSIDE: Meagan Shimkus pitched a three-hit shutout in the first game to help the Rangers split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at the Case Complex on the Parkside campus.
Shimkus (9-4) struck out nine and walked three in the Rangers' 3-0 victory. Parkside (13-10, 3-3 GLVC) got all its runs in the fifth inning on back-to-back home runs by center fielder Katie Homa (two-run homer) and catcher Allison Wodziak.
In the second game, a 6-1 loss, Edwardsville (22-5, 6-2) scored two runs in the third and three in the fourth off loser Jessica Bryant (3-2). The Rangers got their only run in the third on an RBI single by McNellis. Cougars starter Kaitlin Colosimo (12-1) struck out 16 Rangers and allowed just two hits.
CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds were swept by nonconference foe Judson 6-1 and 6-4 at Kenosha.
In the first game, Judson (13-11) scored two runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth. Jill Jeter (7-4) pitched a four-hitter and allowed one run in the fourth.
In the second game, Carthage (10-6) got within a run at 5-4 with two runs in the fifth inning, but Judson scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Stephanie Noel and Meghan Roman each hit a double, Terri Piekosz hit a triple and each had two hits.
Men's golf
UW-PARKSIDE: After the first day of the NCAA Division II Regional Invitational at Carrollton, Ky., the Rangers are tied for fourth with three other teams at 294. Indianapolis leads the meet with 285, followed by Bellarmine at 289 and Grand Valley State at 292.
Andy Hansen shot a 1-under-par 71 for Parkside and is tied for fifth. Corey Sell shot 73 and is tied for 21st and former Park High School standout Bendt Bendtsen shot 74 and is tied for 28th.
Men's volleyball
CARTHAGE: The Red Men beat Clarke College in three games to open play in the Midwest Invitational Tournament at Milwaukee. Carthage (22-7), the second seed in the tournament, beat Clarke (12-16) by scores of 30-15, 30-18, 30-25 and will play top-seeded California-Santa Cruz in the winners' bracket today at 10 a.m. The Banana Slugs (17-6) beat fourth-seeded MSOE (6-18) in three games.
The winner of the tournament should receive a berth in the Molten Championship April 13-14 at Huntingdon, Pa.
Men's tennis
CARTHAGE: The Red Men went 3-0 Friday and Saturday at the Jack Swartz Invitational at Wheaton, Ill., beating Illinois Wesleyan 8-1 and Elmhurst 9-0 Friday and Wheaton 6-3 Saturday.
Men's soccer
UW-PARKSIDE: The Rangers went 1-0-1 on the day in a pair of 70-minute exhibition matches at Wood Road Field.
Parkside won the first game 3-1 over defending Horizon League champion Loyola of Chicago behind a pair of goals by Bojan Jovicic, then, after a five-minute rest, the Rangers played to a scoreless tie against defending Mid-Continent Conference champion Western Illinois.
Parkside coach Rick Kilps said Horlick High School graduate Kyle Stephenson played well in the central defense. Academics
CARTHAGE: Men's swimmer Bryan Pelka and women's track and field runner Angela Hartman have been named to the 2007 winter College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin All-Academic team.
Pelka, an NCAA Division III All-American in the 1,650-meter freestyle, has a 3.958 grade-point average and is majoring in biology. Hartman, an indoor track and field All-American in the 800-meter run, had a 4.0 GPA and is majoring in psychology.
