Phyllis Sides: Friends to remember late teacher with a birthday celebration

Thursday, April 19, 2007 2:12 AM CDT

Friends to remember late teacher with a birthday celebration

There will be a special birthday celebration Saturday at Gilmore Middle School, 2330 Northwestern Ave.

The life of Linda Schroeder, a former sixth-grade teacher at the school, will be remembered.

Schroeder passed away in January after serving the Racine Unified School District for more than 30 years.

Organizers say Schroeder touched so many lives personally and professionally, so the organizers asked those she touched to be part of the celebration, too. They want to invite people who knew Linda to what would have been her 60th birthday party Saturday at 4 p.m. in the school's auditorium.

Following a brief program, birthday cake and beverages will be served in the cafeteria. Some of her family will be in attendance, Cheryl Miller said, "so sharing a special Linda story with them will be appreciated. Happy birthday, Linda. Your spirit will be with us as we celebrate your amazing life."

An evening at the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters

If you're looking for something to do this evening that will expand your mind and your horizons, then Native American artist Truman Lowe's presentation at the Milwaukee Art Museum is for you.

Lowe, an art professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, took on a daunting task when he became curator of contemporary art at the Smithsonian Institution's recently established National Museum of the American Indian, which holds nearly 800,000 objects.

Lowe will share his challenges, his triumphs, and his plans for the museum's future in "The American Indian: A National Visual Arts Tribute," a free presentation tonight at 7 p.m. at the Milwaukee Art Museum, 700 N. Art Museum Drive in Milwaukee. The talk is a presentation of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters as part of the Academy's Academy Evening series. No tickets or registration are required, but seating is limited on a first-come, first-served basis.

Born and raised in Wisconsin and a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, Lowe is a nationally renowned sculptor whose often site-specific work with willow and pine saplings reflect his strong connection to his ancestral heritage and the land and waters of Wisconsin. Academy Evenings take place regularly at the Overture Center in Madison and at other venues around Wisconsin. The public forums are free presentations on a variety of topics of public interest featuring Wisconsin's leading thinkers, scholars and artists. They are intended to encourage public interaction with these leaders in an intimate atmosphere designed to build community. For more information visit http://www.wisconsinacademy.org.
