Sta. Roman serves up a winner

Amanda Sta. Romana and her Carthage College teammates came to play Saturday.

Sta. Romana and the Lady Reds recorded an impressive 5-1 victory over UW-La Crosse in the second round of the NCAA Division III Central Region tournament at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.

Carthage, which is ranked 20th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's NCAA Division III poll, had a first-round bye in the 48-team championship.


Sta. Romana, a graduate of The Prairie School, defeated La Crosse's Angie Riedel 6-4, 6-1 in their No. 1 singles match.

Elizca Buys, Carthage's No. 2 singles player, also won her match in straight sets. Buys defeated Julie Tellefsen, a graduate of St. Catherine's High School, 6-2, 6-1.

Sta. Romana also teamed with Buys to win their No. 1 doubles match. Sta. Romana and Buys beat Riedel and Tellefsen 8-4.


Carthage is ranked sixth in the Central Region; La Crosse is ranked seventh.

Four members of the Carthage men's tennis team have been chosen to the 2007 All-CCIW team. Junior Miguel Yunes (21-5), sophomore Sergio Lopez (20-5) and freshman Jack Schiro (14-7) were chosen to the first team. Senior Dave Sands (19-6) was chosen to the second team.

Carthage's Brad Lindsley was named the CCIW Coach of the Year. Lindsley also earned the aware in 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007.

Track and field

CARTHAGE: The Red Men placed third in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Championship Saturday at Naperville, Ill.

The Red Men were led by their hammer throwers, who took three of the top four places. Carthage's Brandon Jones-Harris won the event with a throw of 49.45 meters, with teammate Chris Hightower placing second at 47.57. Carthage's Jacob Burg was fourth at 47.9.

Carthage had five other second-place finishes. Tanner Folk was second in the long jump at 7.07 meters and second in the triple jump at 13.87 meters. Jones-Harris was second in the shot put at 14.73 meters and Mike White was runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:22.31. Carthage' 400-meter relay team was also second at 42.31.

Carthage's Nate Blazier was fourth in the pole vault at 4.68 meters and teammate Buzzy Brown was fourth in the long jump at 6.79. Carthage's 1,600 relay team finished fourth at 3:20.54.

Carthage totaled 103 points. North Central College won the men's portion of the meet with 275.5 points. Augusta was second with 212.

Patrice Russell led the Carthage women to a fifth-place showing in the CCIW Outdoor Championships at Naperville, Ill.

Russell was second in the shot put at 12.53 meters.

The Lady Reds had four individuals place third. Angela Hartman was third in the 800 run (2:14.9); Julie Rendino was third in the javelin at 37.24; Ashley Grahovec was third in the heptathlon at 3,601, and Justine Petras was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 11.52.93.

Carthage's 400-meter and 1,600 relay teams placed third as well. The Lady Reds' 400-meter relay team's time was 49.30, and their 1,600 relay time was 4:04.78.

Carthage finished with 91.5 points. North Central College won the women's portion of the meet with 207.5 points. Augustana was second with 199.
