Lady Reds' tournament run comes to end

The Carthage College women's tennis team was eliminated from the NCAA Division III regional tournament Sunday.
The Lady Reds losto Gustavus Adolphus Colelge 5-1 at St. Peter, Minn.
The Lady Reds' only victory came at No. 6 singles. That's where Beth Kaufman defeated Darcy Haubrick 6-4, 6-4.
Carthage, which is ranked 20th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's NCAA Division III poll, finishes the season with a 20-6 record.
It was the Lady Reds' third appearance in the NCAA Championship. Their last appearance came in 2005.

Carthage's men's tennis lost to UW-Whitewater 5-4 in the NCAA Division III championship tournament Saturday at St. Peter, Minn.
Carthage won two singles matches, including a marathon match by Sergio Lopez at No. 3. Lopez rallied to beat Steve Klaas 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).
Carthage's other singles' victory came at No. 5, where Phil Hammond beat Bill Stranberg 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
Baseball
CARTHAGE: Steve Coughlin hit a home run and a Tyler Yapp hit sacrifice fly in leading the Red Men to a 5-0 victory over North Park University in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game Sunday at Holmgren Athletic complex in Chicago.
Yapp drove in a run in the first inning with his sacrifice fly and Coughlin delivered a homer in the second inning.
Coughlin went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Yapp went 2-for-3.
Carthage starting pitcher Chris Krepline worked the first seven innings and held the Vikings to four hits.
Trace Ruffie pitched the final two innings to earn his first save.
The victory enabled Carthage to complete a three-game sweep of North Park. The Red Men are 16-5 in the CCIW and 28-11 overall.
UW-PARKSIDE: The Rangers split a doubleheader with Rockhurst University Saturday at Kansas City, Mo.
The Rangers won the first game 14-9 and lost the second game 11-2.
Designated-hitter Brad Frank had a big game for Parkside in the opener. Frank hit a grand slam in the Rangers' eight-run fourth inning.
Mike Umscheid and Casey Garms drove in two runs apiece for the Rangers (19-29, 14-21).
Shaun Corning (2-6) pitched 4 1/2 innings to gain the victory.
In the second game, Parkside fell behind 6-0 after four innings and never could recover. Andy Heller and A.J. Marquardt drove in runs for Parkside.
Track and field
UW-PARKSIDE: Jill Winkler went out in style in her final Great Lakes Valley Conference meet in style.
Winkler, a senior from Neenah, won the 1,500-meter run with a career-best time of 4:34.97 at the GLVC Outdoor Championships at Edwardsville, Ill. It was the fifth GLVC title of her careeer.
Parkside's Jessica Lamp (4:35.02), Naomi Fulton (4:35.86) and Valerie Kelly (4:41.00) were second, third and fourth, respectively.
Lamp also won the 800-meter run at 2:14.66. Winkler was eighth at 2:21.09. Lamp was also fourth in the 3,000-meter run at 10:30.09.
Southern Illinois-Edwardsville won the meet with 280 points. Parkside was eighth with 55 1/2 points.
Brandan Kelly was the only Ranger to score any points in the men's portion of the GLVC championship.
Kelly placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at 55.02.
Softball
CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds were eliminated from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Champions Saturday at Bloomington, Ill.
The Lady Reds lost to Illinois Wesleyan 8-0.
Augustana College won the championship, beating Illinois Wesleyan 6-0 in the title game. It was Augustana's third CCIW championship in the last four years.
