Local church again taking teens to apply for theme park jobs

RACINE - The Rev. Elliott Cohen and several local teenagers will embark this week on what is becoming an annual road trip to the Six Flags amusement park in search of jobs.

The Gurnee, Ill., theme park is hosting a job fair from 2-9 p.m. Tuesday for people ages 15 years and older interested in summer employment. This is the third year Cohen has taken local students to Six Flags as part of a program designed to provide employment training and skills to inner-city youth. Along with a paycheck and work experience, the program is also designed to keep local teens away from violence, gangs and crime during the summer months.

Cohen partnered with the Racine County Covenant Commission and A-1 Transportation Services to get the teenagers to Gurnee for the job fair.

In the past two years the program has helped more than 70 young people secure summer employment at Six Flags. This year the program already has succeeded in assisting more than 30 youth with employment.

Seating is available on the bus taking students to Six Flags on Tuesday. Cohen hopes to take 47 people to Great America in search of jobs. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The bus will leave the Abundant Life Church, 3433 Douglas Ave. at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Anyone interested in attending the job fair must pre-register by calling Abundant Life's administrative office at (262) 637-5433.
