People You Should Know: Raymond Peterson: He looks to the sky for inspiration

Sunday, May 20, 2007 2:23 AM CDT

He looks to the sky for inspiration: Manmade and from God

Name: Raymond Peterson

Age: Two score and 13 years ago my parents brought forth on this fine city - me!

Personal/family: I am proud to say that Racine is my hometown. Dad worked for J.I. Case on the Lake as a machinist. I began working at the Sylvania Airport in fifth grade as a line boy, where I received my pilot's license on my 16th birthday before I could drive a car. After graduating from the mighty J.I. Case High School toward the end of the Vietnam War, I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. An aviation guarantee landed me onboard C-130 Hercules transport aircraft as flight crew flying throughout Southeast Asia. After the war, I enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard again on C-130s in Alaska and eventually served the commandant, Admiral Yost, in Washington, D.C., aboard his jet aircraft, CG-01.

The Rockefeller Family hired me out of the military to fly virtually non-stop around the world. Employed by their corporate flight department 'The Wayfarer Ketch Corp.' I spent many months in Athens, Geneva, Paris, Venice, Moscow, Marrakech, Brazil and Argentina. The finale was a subsequent stint in the U.S. Air Force Reserve with A-10s in Granby, Conn.

I am blissfully married to my darling bride, Doreen, have two sons and Ruth, our Australian Shepherd.

Hobbies/interests: I am captivated by all types of aviation from ultralight aircraft to Boeing 747 airliners. You'll surely find me staring into the sky at the sound of a round engine or jet whine.

Occupation: I am currently an employee of the Federal Aviation Administration District Office located in Milwaukee as an aviation safety inspector. I am serving as the FAA Aviation Safety Action Program manager that oversees a voluntary disclosure program provided to airline maintenance technicians and pilots.

Why is what you're doing important? As a true public servant - serving your federal needs as taxpayers - I help assure a standard of aviation safety to the air traveler.

When friends come to Racine, we go? I really do like to take them to visit our Downtown shops - to see our beautiful city renovations, the breakwater improvements, the Marina and the local airports.

One choice of a dinner companion: Even though I eat with my sweetheart nearly every night, she still is my first choice!

My friends describe me as: A dependable Christian man who firmly stands with clear morals, values, integrity, and is a man that dearly loves and cherishes his wife, his marriage and children.

Person that I admire most: Mr. Craig Bean, the evangelist at the Spring Street Church of Christ, because he truly is a most devout, sincere, and holy man of God who walks the very same path that he preaches. Every Sunday I am humbled, amazed and so spiritually lifted. I have heard numerous priests and ministers the world over. And had not found such a gifted preacher as I've met right here in Racine. He has studied the Gospel intently with such deep insight. And oh, how he can Preach! It is almost as hearing the Apostle Paul talk before you. With all my heart, I invite all who read this and who desire to know Jesus to visit our church. Come and learn about Our Savior, the scriptural way - the way that is solely found in the Bible and with nothing else added. (Bean is also a J.I. Case High School alumni).

What I miss most from my childhood: I miss being a part of the huge crowd of Racine County citizens who would gather every Saturday at the Sylvania Airport along I-94. There aviation enthusiasts would sit on the benches or park along the frontage road all day long merely watching dozens of aircraft take off and land all day long.

In the next five years I would like to accomplish: It would be my desire to get in better health and fitness by doing a bit more outdoor sports like: hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and always hope for more fishing time.
