Pharmacy student named Miss Burlington

BURLINGTON - It wasn't hot enough to melt any chocolate but that didn't stop Angela Gavran from melting the hearts of those jusdging the Miss Burlington pageant.

Gavran won the title of Miss Burlington Area ChocolateFest 2008 Saturday afternoon on the Diamond Stage at the festival grounds. She is the daughter of Craig and Susan Gavran of Wind Lake. She performed a vocal solo for her talent and chose "Generation Rx: Promoting Pharmacy in the Classroom" for her community service platform. Gavran is a senior at the South University School of Pharmacy, Savannah, Ga., where she plans to obtain a doctor of pharmacy degree.

She received a $500 scholarship from Miller Motors and North Shore Bank, a crown from the pageant board of directors, flowers from Cedar Shack Flowers and Gifts in Waterford, and the chance to represent the Burlington area at the Miss Wisconsin Pageant in June 2008.


First runner-up was Stephanie Zito, daughter of Charles and Jill Tamargo of Burlington. She performed a marimba solo for her talent and chose "Musical Education Save the Music" for her community service platform. Zito is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, majoring in American Sign Language interpreting and ASL studies.

In addition to being first runner-up, Zito also won the interview award. As first runner-up, Zito received $100 from the City of Burlington and a flower from Exclusively Yours Floral in Burlington.

Carolyn Streiff was Miss Congeniality. She is the daughter of Scott and Vivian Streiff of Burlington. She presented a physics demonstration for her talent and chose "Campus Security" for her community service platform. Streiff is a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in physics and astrophysics.


Heather Neau received the award for selling the most ads in the program book. She is the daughter of Larry Neau of Kansasville and Diane Reeves of Virginia. She performed a vocal solo for her talent and chose "Four-Paws Therapy Pets Helping People" for her community service platform. Neau hopes to pursue a degree in secondary education.

All other contestants received a $50 savings bond from Edstrom Industries in Waterford, and a flower from Exclusively Yours Floral.

This year marked the 23rd year of the pageant.
