Does anybody remember Fuhrman's Delicatessen on Sixth Street?
Cherie Mayrand called us Monday looking for some help. She is looking for photos of Fuhrman's delicatessen, which was run by her parents in the early 1950s. The deli was located on Sixth Street near Ruth Karnes' bridal shop, Arthur Murray Dance Studio, a nearby fruit stand and a fur store run by a Mr. Korn.
Does anyone out there have a photo of Fuhrman's? If so, it would mean a lot to Cherie if you would call her at (262) 639-5313.
As for GYA, we'd love to hear more descriptions of Sixth Street from the 1950s. It sounds like a happening place. Send your memories to the e-mail address or phone number below.
We tackled this question a few months back with little success. Has anyone out there seen the watermelon trucks this year? If so, get in touch!
Jone Dunford, of Cadillac, Mich., writes: Was Racine on daylight-saving time on April 6, 1961?
No. Observance of daylight-saving time began on April 28, 1961, according to several reports from that time.
In the story last week about the giraffe at the Racine Zoo, I didn't see anything on how you move a giraffe. So, how do you move a giraffe?
This question from Dave came with an answer in the form of a video on the Milwaukee Zoo Society's Web site. The video shows that zoos move giraffes with (drumroll, please) ... a really tall trailer. Watching the video, the giraffe trailer looks like a horse trailer with a tall roof. The Milwaukee giraffe could be seen in the back with plenty of headroom before being led into its exhibit.
The question refers to a story last week about the Racine Zoo sending its female giraffe, Twiga, to another zoo in exchange for two male giraffes. The hope is Twiga will have a baby at another zoo.

GYA helps
Don't tell the other sections and features in the paper, but GYA has the best readers in The Journal Times. Seriously, whenever we pose a question or request help, readers immediately respond with stories, information and donations to people in need. It's this response that keeps the column going - and it's your answers that we believe can help even more.
Starting with today's column, GYA is going to dedicate space to the needs of nonprofit organizations in Racine County. We'll run the name of the organization, donations they need and where you can send them or drop them off.
Today's nonprofit is the Racine County Food Bank. They get lots of attention, but they help LOTS of people get enough to eat. The Food Bank is always in need of food donations such as canned meats and fish, heat-and-eat foods, peanut butter, diapers and baby formula (for a complete list, visit:
http://www.racinecountyfoodbank.org).
However, cash donations are the best way to help. Money allows them to buy perishable goods and fill shortages when they arrive. You can send donations to: Racine County Food Bank, 2000 DeKoven Ave., Racine, WI 53403-2481.
Do you know an organization that helps people in the community? Contact us and tell us what is needed. We'll print the requests in future columns. Thanks!
