About the Author

Cynthia Dennis was a columnist and feature writer for the Milwaukee Journal for 18 years. She also worked as a copywriter for radio and television, and was a graduate teaching assistant in journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She holds a M.A. in communication from UWM and B.S. in journalism from the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Two authors, one family

Racine resident Margo Drummond, Cynthia Dennis’ younger sister, is also an author.

Drummond, who taught social studies with the Racine Unified School district for more than 30 years, has published several books relating to the history of Racine. Her most recent, “Here’s to Your Health,” is the story of the Horlick family and their malted milk product. It was nominated for the State Historical Book Award this year.

During her time with RUSD, Drummond also developed and taught a course called “Death and Dying: Issues of Living and Life.” At the urging of her students, she wrote a book titled “Blessings of Being Mortal: How A Mature Understanding of Death can Free us to Live Wisely and Well,” published in 2001. She also developed and taught a course on Racine History.

Throughout her years in Racine, Drummond has worked on the Racine Cemetery Commission and been a member of Preservation Racine and the Racine Heritage Museum. She is married to James Drummond, former Racine County Circuit Court commissioner. The couple met while serving in the Peace Corps.

Copies of Drummond’s books are available at the Racine Public Library, as well as in area bookstores.
