Rally for peace set today

at Sam Johnson Parkway

RACINE — The Racine Coalition for Peace & Justice in cooperation with the Wisconsin Network for Peace & Justice will hold a rally for peace from noon to 12:45 p.m. today on Sam Johnson Parkway.

They will rally for the United States out of Iraq and no attack on Iran. For more information, call Richard Kinch at (262) 638-0204.

Women’s Resource Center hosts

chili cook-off Thursday

DOVER — The Women’s Resource Center will celebrate Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a chili cook-off from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Eagle Lake Park, 23705 Church Road.

There will be games and a presentation on "Health Relationships." Transportation is provided.

Proper Paws open house today

KENOSHA — Proper Paws University Kenosha Campus, 5150 60th St., will host an open house, from 1 to 3 p.m. today.

There will be tours, free dog training advice, refreshments and a ribbon cutting. The public is invited.

Church hosts Men’s Breakfast Oct. 13

FRANKSVILLE — Franksville United Methodist Church, 10402 Northwestern Ave., will host a free Men’s Breakfast from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Oct. 13.

Claudius Adebayo, executive director of the Opportunities Industrialization Center of Racine County Inc., will speak on the Youthbuild project in Racine. Reservations are required by calling (262) 886-0326.

Walk Oct. 13 will benefit Women’s and Children’s Horizons

KENOSHA — Women’s and Children’s Horizons, a center for victims of domestic abuse, want to raise awareness of the issue by hosting a walk called Shelter Them from the Storm at 9 a.m. Oct. 13 at Veterans Memorial Park, 625 52nd St.

People may bring an umbrella or purchase one at the event to "shelter them from the storm."

Registration fees are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12–17. For more information, call Pam Carper at (262) 656-3500.

Learn about adoption options at meeting Oct. 17

KENOSHA — Community Adoption Center Inc. will hold an informational meeting for prospective adoptive parents at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in the first floor meeting room E at Aurora Medical Center, 10400 75th St.

Community Adoption Center is a fully licensed child placing agency with programs in agency infant, independent placements and international adoptions through 17 foreign countries. There are also children available with special needs, both domestically and in foreign countries.

Costs for the various adoption programs, tips on selecting the program that is right for your family and an overview of legal requirements for adoption will be presented at the meeting. The advantages of the various programs will be discussed.

Couples or single people who are interested in learning more about adoption are encouraged to call (608) 756-0405 to register in advance.

Family Story Hour Oct. 16 at Graham Public Library

UNION GROVE — Graham Public Library, 1215 Main St., will offer a Family Story Hour at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16.

"Pet Show!" is the theme and will feature stories about all kinds of pets, from the usual to the most unusual. The intent is to have fun while spending time together as a family. Children are encouraged to bring their own stuffed animal "pet." There will also be time allowed for all to select books to check out and read at home. A snack will be served.

Night Hike, Family Nature Day set at River Bend

CALEDONIA — River Bend Nature Center, 3600 N. Green Bay Road, is offering these events:

 A Public Night Hike will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. Costs for members are $5 adults, $3 ages 12 and under. Nonmember costs are $6 adults, $4 ages 12 and under.

 A Family Nature Day will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 14. Participants will enjoy a fun craft as well as a guided hike. Costs for members are $5 adults, $4 ages 12 and under. Costs for nonmembers are $8 adults, $7 ages 12 and under. All ages are welcome.

YMCA seeking volunteers

for annual Haunted House

RACINE — Do you love acting, doing stage makeup, building sets or just scaring the pants off people?

Then the Racine Family YMCA needs you. They are again hosting The "How Fast Can You Run" YMCA Haunted House and is looking for volunteers to help. People may volunteer for one night, one weekend or for all nights.

The YMCA Haunted House will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 19-20 and 26-27, and from noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 28. Volunteers need to be at the YMCA by 4:30 p.m. for makeup. Rehearsals will be held Oct. 15-18.

Haunted House proceeds support YMCA youth programs through the Strong Kids Campaign. These programs aid in redirecting area kids into constructive activities with an emphasis on family structure. The Strong Kids campaign ensures that youth and families have access to the YMCA through membership, School Age Child Care, youth sports, day camp, swimming and more.

Musical instruments needed

RACINE — The Lonely Instruments Need Kids (LINK) program is seeking slightly used musical instrument in good playing condition.

These instruments are given to children who are enrolled in a Racine County school music program. The LINK program focuses on elementary and middle school children in a band or orchestra class who might not otherwise be able to afford an instrument themselves. They are referred to the program by their teacher, principal or music director.

To donate an instrument, call the Racine Arts Council office at (262) 635-0261 or simply drop it off at 505 Sixth St. from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. String instruments and horns are especially needed.

Toys available for lending

STURTEVANT — The Toy Lending Library at Child Care Resource & Referral Services, 9400 Durand Ave., is open from 6 to 8 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month and from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month.

The library is open to anyone who has a desire to help children learn and develop through play. Toys are available to borrow for up to one month at a time. Memberships are available for three, six or 12 months for a nominal fee. Toys are available for children with special needs.

Talsky to teach basket-weaving techniques at convention

WATERFORD — Pamela Talsky of Waterford has been selected to teach her "Pine Needle Lidded Treasure," "Antler Bowl-Lievable" and " ‘Off the Wall’ Alaskan Cedar Burl Pine Needle Dish" at the Association of Michigan Basketmakers. The convention will be held at the Kalamazoo Radisson Hotel in Kalamazoo, Mich., Oct. 10-14.

Born in Milwaukee, and now residing in Waterford, Talsky has been weaving since 1994 and teaching since 1995.

It started with a pine needle basket in June of 1994. She learned from books and wove and sold over 150 baskets her first year. Talsky took her first real class at the IBA Convention in 1996 with JoAnn Kelly Catsos. She won the IBA 1996 New Weavers award for a Nantucket Creel purse she wove from a kit purchased at Gratiot Lake Basketry.

Chosen from a pool of approximately 200 designs, Talsky’s designs are among the 100 to be taught at the 2007 AMB Convention where over 400 weavers will gather to perpetuate the art of basketry.

Children’s resale event Oct. 13

RACINE — A children’s resale event will be held from 7:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 13 at Peace Lutheran Church, 1619 Newman Road.

The public is welcome to drop off and set up children’s items on Friday afternoon for the resale event the next day. They should return from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 13 to pick up their earnings and remaining items not sold. People may drop off toys, equipment and clothing their children have outgrown.

Twenty-five percent of each seller’s earnings will be donated to the Better Together Program. This program provides community outreach opportunities to various Racine County organizations by hosting drives for school supplies, clothes and books in addition to other local fund raising opportunities.
