Carnell Williford was in the right place at the right time Friday night.
The 5-foot-11 junior guard scored on a layup after making a steal with 7.8 seconds remaining in overtime, giving the Horlick High School boys’ basketball team a 53-51 Southeast Conference victory over Oak Creek at Oak Creek. Williford finished with seven points after a scoreless first half.
With the score tied at 47-47 and 11 seconds remaining in regulation, 6-7 forward Jamil Wilson missed two free throws for Horlick. The Rebels got the ball back on a turnver with 4.5 seconds remaining, but Wilson couldn’t get a shot off in time after driving into the lane.

Horlick trailed 30-22 at halftime, but came on strongly in the second half.
“We wore them out,” Horlick coach Jason Treutelaar said. “We pressed them full court the whole game. Our best offense was our defense.”
SOUTH MILWAUKEE 59, PARK 57: The Panthers came back from a 25-point third quarter deficit and led by two with 49 seconds left, but couldn’t close out their season and Southeast Conference opener at South Milwaukee.
The Panthers surged back and led 57-55 with 49 seconds left and had the ball. But Park turned it over and the Rockets (2-0, 1-0 SEC) scored with 21 seconds left. Park worked the clock down to two seconds, but missed a baseline jumper. A South Milwaukee player got the rebound, was fouled and made 1-of-2 free throws. Park rebounded the second attempt, but missed their final shot as time expired.
Park was hurt by its free-throw shooting. The Panthers hit 7-of-21 from the line.
“The kids played with a lot of heart,” Park coach Jim Betker said. “I’m happy with the way they came back and made a statement.”
PJ Lockridge-Beverly scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Panthers.
MUSKEGO 47, CASE 46, OT: The Eagles and Warriors played a tough defensive game, but Muskego got a quick lead in overtime and held on to win at Case in the Southeast Conference opener for both teams.
The Eagles (0-2 overall) took as much as a six-point lead in the third quarter, but scored just four in the fourth quarter and the game went to overtime tied at 41-41.
In overtime, the Warriors
(2-1) took a four-point lead, but 6-foot-9 forward Quinton Gustavson made a 3-point basket to get Case within one at 47-46. Gustavson stole the ball back and the Eagles had two chances to win with 13 seconds left, but Justin Robinson’s basket rimmed out and DeShawn Liggins’ shot was short.
Parish Barker led Case with 12 points and Stephen Jaskulske added 11.
ST. CATHERINE’S 68, KENOSHA ST. JOSEPH 23: Coming off a disappointing season-opening loss to Milwaukee Bay View Tuesday night, the Angels got back on track with good, old-fashioned man-to-man defense in this Lakeshore Conference game in the John F. McGuire Gymnasium.
Behind what coach Bob Letsch described as a team effort, St. Catherine’s held St. Joseph to single digits in each of the first three quarters. That defense peaked in the third quarter, when St. Joseph was held scoreless.
A number of players stepped up for St. Catherine’s at various times. In the second quarter, Mike Flancher scored all eight of his points and Nick Bixler scored six of his eight. Javar Lawson scored 10 of his 12 points in the first quarter and Joe Hamilton came off the bench to grab all seven of his rebounds in the fourth quarter.
Other standouts for the Angels (1-1) included Mitch Quill, who had eight points and six rebounds, and Jordan Nash, who scored eight points.
UNION GROVE 48, WESTOSHA CENTRAL 45: Mike Ledger came through in the clutch for the Broncos in their Lakeshore Conference season opener at Paddock Lake.
Ledger made two free throws with about a minute left in the game and then made two more free throws with 13 seconds left. Ledger finished the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
“Ledger had a great game,’’ said Broncos coach Dave Pettit, whose team is 1-1 overall. “He seemed to get timely rebounds and hitting those front ends of a bonus late in the game was awesome.’’
The Broncos also got a nice game from senior guard Nick Bauer, who had a game-high 14 points.
Westosha Central is 0-2 and 0-1.
BADGER 64, WATERFORD 48: The Wolverines did a solid job on defense, holding Badger’s two leading scorers to a combined nine points, but Waterford had trouble at the free-throw line and the Badgers were able to hit from long range for a victory at Lake Geneva in the Lakeshore Conference opener for both teams.
Waterford (0-2 overall) held Badgers’ 6-foot-6 center Kevin Wieters scoreless and held point guard Jimmy Merritt to nine points, but Zach Adams (21 points) made four 3-point baskets and Braden Tice (19 points) made three for Badger (2-0).
The Wolverines, who went just 6-for-13 from the free-throw line, were led by Brent Kuschewski with 12 points and seven rebounds.
DOMINICAN 79, PRAIRIE 37: The Hawks found themselves behind 26-4 after the first quarter and found out how good Midwest Classic Conference favorite Dominican is in an MCC Classic Division game at Whitefish Bay.
Six players scored for the Knights (3-0, 1-0 MCC) as they took the big lead. Prairie (1-1 overall and MCC) played relatively even with Dominican in the second and fourth quarters, but the Knights’ experience was too much for the young Hawks.
Jake Zimmerman led Prairie with seven points.
The Knights had four players score in double figures, led by Marques Morgan with 15 points.
SHORELAND LUTHERAN 52, CATHOLIC CENTRAL 34: The Pacers held the Hilltoppers to single-digit scoring in the first, third and fourth quarters to win their season and Midwest Classic Conference opener at Burlington.
Shoreland led 12-3 after the first quarter, but Catholic Central (2-1, 0-1 MCC) rallied to take a 19-18 halftime lead. The Pacers outscored the Hilltoppers 34-15 in the second half.

Girls
CASE 57, MUSKEGO 51: The Eagles’ mix of veterans and freshmen remained undefeated and likely had one of the best performances in school history against the Warriors in the Southeast Conference opener for both teams.
Case (3-0 overall) went 18-for-20 at the free-throw line — 90 percent — in the game. Junior Tyeisha Mitchell and senior Jaleesa Trussell each went 6-for-6 and freshman Samantha Logic went 5-for-6.
Muskego (2-1) actually took an 18-8 lead after the first quarter, but the Eagles got back within 27-23 at halftime and took the lead with a run in the third quarter. Trussell had all of her free throws in the fourth quarter, including four key ones that kept the Warriors at bay.
“In the second and third quarters, we were able to find some balance and move in the right direction,” Case coach Willie Maryland said.
Mitchell came off the bench in the third quarter and her defense helped the Eagles take the lead.
Senior Na’Tasha Farr led four Eagles in double figures with 15 points. Freshman Samantha Logic had 11 points and Trussell and freshman Asia Barry had 10 each. Farr had eight rebounds and Logic added five rebounds, six assists and six steals.
Jenna Endisch led Muskego with 21 points.
OAK CREEK 69, HORLICK 45: The Rebels couldn’t overcome a slow start in loss to Oak Creek in the Southeast Confernece opener for both schools.
The Knights (1-1) jumped out to a 20-7 lead and led 38-18 at halftime. Freshman Sarah Lucareli led the Rebels (0-2) with eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Shauna and Sydney Galica added seven each.
SOUTH MILWAUKEE 66, PARK 57: The Panthers led throughout the first half of this Southeast Conference game in Park’s fieldhouse, but were eventually done in by poor shooting.
On a night when they reduced their turnovers to 10 after having 52 in the first two games, the Panthers missed 23 shots within six feet of the basket, coach Dan Spranger said. Park also made only 15 of 30 free-throw attempts.
Shawnta Thomas led Park
(1-2, 0-1 SEC) with 17 points, six assists and five rebounds. Idalia Agron added 12 points, four steals and four assists and Tiara Harron had 10 points, six steals and three assists.

Burlington shot just 26.3 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from the free-throw line.
Elise Vos and Lindsey Dickmann each had six points to lead the Demons and Catie Grandi had eight rebounds.
WAUKESHA WEST 54, WATERFORD 51: Jordan Bohlman scored all 15 of her team-high 15 points in the second half, but it wasn’t quite enough for Waterford in this nonconference game at Waukesha.
Waterford trailed 26-14 at halftime, but outscored West 37-28 in the second half.
“It was the ugliest first half I can remember,” Waterford coach Mark Peperkorn said. “We had a deer-in-the-headlights look. But the second half was one of the most beautiful halves of basketball I’ve ever seen us play.”
With the Wolverines trailing 52-51 with less than 20 seconds to play, a Waterford player missed a shot. West got the rebound and beat Waterford for a layup with 13 seconds left for the game’s final margin.
Jenny Carriveau added 11 points and Alyssa Schuttenhelm 10 for the Wolverines (0-2). Sam Hribar added a team-high seven rebounds.
