Red Men run out of comebacks

Carthage College recovered from a double digit deficit but couldn’t rally a second time Friday night in a 75-63 loss to Calvin College in the CCIW-MIAA Classic at Grand Rapids, Mich.
The Red Men (3-1) fell behind 20-10 and trailed 39-30 at halftime before battling back early in the second half. Trey Bowens, who led the Red Men with 26 points, sparked Carthage’s comeback with a layup and Joe Higgins followed with a 3-point basket as the Red Men cut their deficit to 44-41.
Bowens added another basket off a steal to cut the lead to one. Calvin (4-1), a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association answered on Josh Engelman’s tip-in but Steve Djurickovic’s jumper trimmed the lead to 46-45.
Djurickovic finished with 14 points.
John Mantel had 19 points and Caleb Veldhouse and Griffin each had 16 for Calvin.
HOPE 80, CARTHAGE 60: Erika Burchholz had 17 points and Shana Lieberman added 13 for Carthage in a loss to Hope in the CCIW-MIAA Classic at Holland, Mich.
The Carthage women lost for the first time after opening the season with a pair of wins.
Carrie Snikkers had 16 points and nine rebounds and Jordy Boles added 14 points for Hope (4-0).
