Buchholz answers call for Lady Reds

Erika Buchholz seems immune to pressure.

With the game in the balance, Buchholz stepped up and led Carthage College to an exciting 52-50 victory over Calvin College in a CCIW-MIAA Classic basketball game Saturday at Holland, Mich.

Buchholz made her first big contribution in the game with 4 minutes, 15 seconds remaining in the game. That’s when she made a 3-pointer to give the Lady Reds a 50-48 lead.

Then, after Calvin’s Marcia Harris made a jump shot to tie the game at 50-50 with 3:10 left in the game, neither team could score until Buchholz made both of her free throw attempts with 0:04 left to give Carthage the victory.

Buchholz finished the game with a team-high 15 points. She was the only Carthage player to score in double figures.

Shana Lieberman contributed eight points and Katie Jager added seven points and seven rebounds.

Marcia Harris totaled a game-high 16 points for Calvin, which led 28-26 at halftime.

The triumph improved Carthage’s overall record to 3-1.

Calvin dropped to 3-2.

Men

HOPE 85, CARTHAGE 75: The Red Men got off to a slow start and never could fully recover in losing in the CCIW-MIAA Classic at Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Red Men fell behind 43-27 at halftime as Hope connected on 48 percent of their field-goal attempts.

In contrast, Carthage made just 32 percent of its shots from the floor in the first half.

Hope didn’t cool off in the second half, either. It made 12 of 22 shots — a sizzling 54 percent.

Freshman guard Steve Djurickovic of Kenosha turned in an impressive game for the Red Men.

Djurickovic scored a game-leading 22 points, hitting on 6-of-11 field-goal attempts. He was also 9-of-10 from the line.

Billy Shemerdiak and Milos Vukosavljevic contributor 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Hope had four players score in double figures, led by Marcus Vanderheide with 19.

While Carthage converted on 20 of 25 free throws in the game, Hope did even better, making 26 of 38 free throws.

The loss lowered Carthage’s record to 3-2. Hope is 3-1.
