Gordon Kacala: Companies making good use of WMEP's expanded services

Manufacturers in Racine County are paying attention when it comes to responding to the marketplace. Both large and small companies that Racine County Economic Development Corp. staff visit with during the year are changing. The employers, many of whom have been with us for decades, are now driven by technology and innovation, world markets and better ways of doing business.

That’s why the expanded partnership between existing development organizations and the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership, or WMEP, is so important. In late 2007, WMEP added additional staff to better serve manufacturers in Racine County — and what they do is critical to our economy.

WMEP provides technical expertise and business assistance to help small- and mid-size manufacturers adopt advanced manufacturing technologies and business practices. WMEP is a leader in lean manufacturing, growth services, strategic business development, quality systems and supplier development. During the past five years, WMEP-assisted manufacturers reported a combined impact of $839 million with more than 8,000 jobs created or retained.

Historically, WMEP services have been underutilized in Racine County. WMEP Executive Director Mike Klonsinski and I aren’t quite sure why, but the scenario needs to change. Over the next year, both of our organizations, along with others in Racine County, will be working to make sure our manufacturers, as well as intermediaries, such as bankers, accountants, attorneys and others, are aware of WMEP’s services and how they can help existing companies.

That information is critical, says Steve Harrell, WMEP business development specialist and the contact person for WMEP services in Racine County. “I represent more than 30 manufacturing specialists that we employ and can match their specific skills and experience on lean, quality (ISO or Six Sigma), cultural issues, supplier development, business growth and marketing services to the specific needs or issues of each manufacturer we serve” said Harrell.

Not only does WMEP talk a good game, it backs it up. According to Franksville-based Drewco Corp., WMEP has played a key role in helping the company increase profitability and efficiency, grow sales and improve customer service. Drewco specializes in rapidly designing and producing high-quality work-holding devices used in a variety of industries.

“WMEP is a great resource for firms like ours,” said Ann Pettibone, Drewco’s CEO. “We’ve done many projects with WMEP over the past 10 years, and we’re a much better and stronger company as a result.”

Finally, WMEP fits right in to the team environment here in Racine County. WMEP staff have not only met with RCEDC, but staff from Gateway Technical College and Racine Area Manufacturers and Commerce, both of which provide services to Racine County businesses.

While the concerted effort of many business owners in Racine County to reinvent their companies has provided positive results, the services of RAMAC, Gateway and now the beefed-up services of WMEP can only add to the potential for the growth of our economy.
