Cine-Matic features 'When Comedy Was King' anthology

RACINE — Cine-Matic, the free movie series at the JavaVino Coffee Shop, 424 Main St., will show the silent movie anthology, “When Comedy Was King,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

According to Racine film historian James L. Neibaur, curator for the Cine-Matic series, “When Comedy Was King” features most of the great silent movie stars.

“It was put together in 1960,” Neibaur said, “during a time when silent movies had been forgotten. The producer gathered films with Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, Fatty Arbuckle, The Keystone Cops and many more. ‘When Comedy Was King’ becameso popular, it caused a renewed interest in silent movies.

“Because of this movie, some of the silent movie comedians still alive in 1960 received greater recognition from a new generation. Buster Keaton started getting work in movies and TV shows. Stan Laurel was given a lifetime achievement award at the Oscars.

“’When Comedy Was King’ is not only filled with funny moments, it is also a learning experience for the audience, introducing them to many unfairly forgotten comedians who were once stars, along with the well-remembered legends.”
