Kitchen fire cause by cooking
BY JOURNAL TIMES STAFF
RACINE - A small kitchen fire in a 4-unit building Sunday was caused by unattended cooking, according to Racine firefighters.
A resident of the building at 518 Eighth St. told firefighters she fell asleep and was awakened by the smell of smoke.
The Racine Fire Department was called to the building at 9:16 a.m. Sunday. The fire was extinguished quickly. Reports said damage was confined to the kitchen and a small amount of smoke damage to the living room.
Damage estimates are $1,000.
Firefighters said the building was evacuated temporarily while crews were working on the fire.
The apartment apparently did not have working smoke alarms.
