CALEDONIA — A new fire chief has been selected for the village.

Richard Roeder, formerly the assistant chief of the department, was unanimously selected by the Police and Fire Commission on Thursday, said commission President Fran Petrick.

“Dick has all of the qualifications that were set forth by the village board,” Petrick said. “We’re real happy.”

Former Chief Pete Waselchuk announced his retirement earlier this year, and his last day was July 10. Roeder has been acting chief since Waselchuk left.

Petrick said the commission had decided to look at internal applicants for the position first, and the process didn’t take long.

“For once, everything went very, very smoothly,” Petrick said. “We had a good group to choose from.”
