Where does baby corn from?
We could make a joke about the mama ear and the papa ear, but …
Anyhow, baby corn isn't a specific genetic deviation of corn. Baby corn ears are just immature ears of regular corn.
Various types of corn can produce baby corn ears. Many seed companies sell special seeds for baby corn, but these seed types also will produce regular-sized ears of corn.
It's all in the harvest with baby corn. Baby corn ears are hand-picked as soon as the silks emerge from the ear tips, or a few days later. Corn matures quickly and the harvest must be timed carefully to avoid getting normal corn ears. Baby corn ears are generally 4.5 centimeters to 10 centimeters in length and 7 millimeters to 17 millimeters in diameter.
Baby corn is popular in Asian cuisine and on salads. Most baby corn available in the United States is grown in Asia, particularly Thailand. It must be hand-picked and is too labor-intensive for American farms. It is, however an important crop to the Thais.
Where can I donate a winter coat that's in good shape?
If you have winter coats or jackets you're not using that are taking up space in your closet, please consider donating them to Strouf Funeral Home's Coat Drive. This drive is the first of what will became an annual event.
Strouf is asking for your help to make "Make A Difference Day" a success in the community by donating coats or jackets of any size. Donations can be dropped off at Strouf Funeral Home, 1001 High St., Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Greentree Cleaners will clean all the coats donated to the drive. The coats will be distributed on Make a Difference Day, Oct. 27 from 1-3 p.m. at Strouf's. For more information, call (262) 632-5101.
Root River Environmental Center, located at 1301 W. Sixth St., is also holding a coat drive and will distribute any coats collected from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Oct. 27.
