Yes, that's one bank with no shortage of assets.
The Skill Bank receives about 220 requests each month, said Ellen Mutter, community outreach services leader for Lincoln Lutheran. If Racine County residents 60 and over need work done, the organization pairs them with one of about 80 seniors who have those skills.
It's free to call, but it's not a volunteer program. Workers and clients negotiate the price for each job.
Typically callers need help unclogging sinks, cleaning gutters, mowing lawns or fixing minor electrical problems, Mutter said. They must own the building where they want the work done.
Call the Skill Bank at (262) 637-7515 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
What happened to the benches on Michigan Boulevard between Augusta and William streets?
They got benched.
The city removed them last year, and the nasty winter weather hit before workers could replace them with snazzier ones, Parks Manager Jack Schumann said. As part of a lakefront improvement effort, he said the new benches will have decorative iron and other distinct features.
What is being erected by the pump house on Spring Street? Does it have anything to do regarding the Root River flooding last June?
The work was to replace a worn-down steel pipe from the 1960s, said Keith Haas, general manager of Racine's water and wastewater utilities. The pipe takes gunk under the river from the lift station at tiny Brose Park, 104 Luedtke Ave., to a large interceptor pipe on the other side. The new pipe is made of a non-corroding plastic material.
"Otherwise we discharge raw sewage into the river, which is not a good thing," Haas said.
The $110,000 project is not related to last year's flooding.
Is there any place in the county to get rid of old medicine rather than throwing it down the toilet or in the garbage?
Good idea. The salmon can handle their triglycerides on their own, and the seagulls frequenting the dump are plenty frisky without Zoloft.
A medicine collection day is planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 18 at two sites in Racine County: 6200 21st St. in Racine and 156 E. State St. in Burlington.
According to the flyer, over-the-counter and prescription drugs will be taken. That includes "ointments, sprays, inhalers, creams, vials and pet medications," the flyer said.
Where can I get muscat raisins?
A little online search tipped me off that it's not "musket" raisins, which sounded like a Civil War accessory. For the uninitiated, these are puffy, seeded raisins.
"Exceptionally fruity in flavor, Muscats are highly prized for snacking and special recipes," according to the Sun-Maid Web site.
A bunch of companies offer direct sales of the specialty raisins online, but we're looking to find out if any local stores carry them. Let me know if you've heard anything through the grapevine.
