How did Green Bay come to be known as Titletown?
We've answered this question in the past, but ESPN's dumb summer contest to find out which town is Title Town, U.S.A., has thrust the moniker into the public eye. Which is why we probably received this question.
Jack Yuenger of the Green Bay Press-Gazette coined the phrase. Yuenger worked as the Press-Gazette's advertising manager in 1961 when the Packers beat the Giants 37-0 for the NFL title.
Yuenger convinced the Press-Gazette to print the slogan on signs and distribute those signs to the public, and the moniker stuck.
The 1961 title, the first under Coach Vince Lombardi, also is the first championship game the Packers won in Green Bay. They repeated as champs in 1962 with a 16-7 victory over the Giants at Yankee Stadium.
The Packers are winners of 12 titles, the most of any team in the NFL. Nine NFL championships - in 1929, 1930, 1931, 1936, 1939, 1944, 1961, 1962 and 1965 - and Super Bowls in the 1966, 1967 and 1996 seasons - highlight the Packers' postseason prowess.
The Packers played for but lost titles in 1938, 1960 and 1997.
The Giants are winners of seven titles - four NFL Championships - 1927, 1934, 1938 and 1956 - and three Super Bowls, in 1986, 1990 and 2007 seasons.
What country first legalized euthanasia?
In keeping with today's theme of a few odd questions, the Netherlands in April 2002. Belgium followed in September 2002.
A physician in the Netherlands must follow strict legal requirements if they wish to avoid prosecution. The patient must already have been in the doctor's care for a period of time and their suffering must be unbearable, with no hope of recovery. The patient must make a formal and voluntary request and thoroughly discuss the matter with their physician. The physician must then consult a colleague and run all the information by that individual to ensure the requirements are being satisfied.
Belgium's law is similar to that of the Netherlands.
Oregon enacted a physician-assisted suicide law in November 1994. This allows doctors to prescribe a lethal dose of medication to terminally ill patients who meet certain requirements, including state residency. The federal government has tried challenging the law numerous times, but have so far been unsuccessful.
