FLU CLINICS
Flu shots are highly recommended for people ages 50 and older, people ages 9 and older with a long-term health problem, pregnant women, health care workers and family members coming in close contact with people at risk of serious influenza, household contacts or out-of-home caretakers of infants from birth to age 5 and people age 50 and older, anyone with long-term health problems or with a weakened immune system, or with muscle or nerve disorders that can lead to breathing or swallowing problems, residents of nursing homes and other chronic-care facilities and those who are at risk of serious complications from influenza.
Flu strains are new each year, so last year's vaccination will be ineffective for this year's strain. People who have severe allergic reactions to eggs, egg products, latex or Thimerosal (found in contact lens solution) or have a history of Guillain-Barre' Syndrome or an active, uncontrolled neurological disease should not get a flu shot. Pregnant women must have a prescription to receive a flu shot.
Pneumonia vaccinations are recommended for those age 65 or older or under age 65 with chronic health conditions such as diabetes or heart or lung diseases. Usually, one dose of pneumococcal vaccine is recommended per lifetime. Certain individuals may benefit from an additional dose.
