BURLINGTON - Three young women from the Burlington area will compete for the title of Miss Burlington Area ChocolateFest 2009 at 2 p.m. May 24 on the Diamond Stage at the ChocolateFest grounds, Highway 36. This year marks the 24th year of the pageant.
Included in the pageant program will be a Miss Wisconsin Pageant Preview of the wardrobe and talent that Miss Burlington Area ChocolateFest 2008 Angela Gavran will take to the Miss Wisconsin pageant in June. She will perform a Broadway dance for her talent presentation. Gavran's community service platform is "Generation Rx: Promoting Pharmacy in the Classroom."
Gavran, the daughter of Craig and Susan Gavran of Wind Lake, earned a doctor of pharmacy from South University School of Pharmacy, Savannah, Ga.
The pageant competition begins with a 10-minute private interview with each contestant and a panel of five judges prior to the pageant program. Each contestant will be judged in on-stage question, lifestyle and fitness in swimwear, talent, and presence and poise in evening wear.
A music interlude will be performed by a quartet from the Riverport Chapter of Sweet Adelines.
The mistress of ceremonies is Miss Burlington Area ChocolateFest 2006 and Miss Wisconsin USA 2007 Caitlin Morrall. She will also dance as part of the program.
The winner of the pageant will receive a $500 scholarship from Miller Motors and North Shore Bank, a $50 savings bond from Edstrom Industries in Waterford, a crown from the pageant board of directors, flowers from Cedar Shack Flowers and Gifts in Waterford and the chance to represent the Burlington area at the Miss Wisconsin Pageant in June of 2009.
The first runner-up will receive $100 from the City of Burlington, a $50 savings bond from Edstrom Industries, and a flower from Exclusively Yours Floral.
The second runner-up will receive a $100 savings bond from Edstrom Industries and a flower from Exclusively Yours Floral.
Awards will be given for Miss Congeniality and for selling the most ads in the program book. An additional award will be presented to the contestant with the highest interview score. The $100 award is given by Alex and Julia Hansch (Burlington's 1999 representative) and JanaLee Kraschnewski (Burlington's 2002 representative) and Tom Hitchcock.
Admission to the pageant is free with ChocolateFest admission. Festival admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12. There is no charge for children 4 and younger. In case of inclement weather, the pageant will be held at the Burlington High School commons.
Paige Kuhn, daughter of Bob Kuhn and Deanna Page of Burlington. She will perform a piano solo for her talent and has chosen "Uniting the Nations: Learn a Language" for her community service platform. Kuhn is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Emily Curtiss, daughter of Paul and Rhonda Hansen of Union Grove. She will perform a vocal solo for her talent and has chosen "Promoting Dental Health to Children" for her community service platform. Curtiss is a senior at Waterford Union High School.
Stephanie Zito, daughter of Charles and Jill Tamargo of Burlington. She will perform a marimba solo for her talent and has chosen "Musical Education - Save the Music" for her community service platform. She is currently a sophomore at UW-Milwaukee majoring in American Sign Language interpreting and ASL studies.
