Mr. and Mrs. Donald Carl Doebereiner of 3800 Cheyenne Court celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary during a family dinner Nov. 15 at Roma Lodge. They also celebrated Doebereiner’s 90th birthday during the dinner, which included her brother, Raymond Theisen.

They lived on the same block and their first date was to a Horlick vs. Park high school football game. They went Downtown afterward for ice cream sundaes.

Doebereiner was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Racine. He married the former Mary Elaine Theisen on Nov. 4, 1944, at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church.

Doebereiner was employed as a set-up man by Walker Manufacturing Co. for 37 years, retiring on March 1, 1979.

He was a member of the Catholic Men’s Association. One of his hobbies is growing flowers on their patio.

Mrs. Doebereiner, 87, was employed as an office secretary by the Milwaukee Cheese Co. in Racine. She worked there for three years, until Dec. 7, 1945.

Mrs. Doebereiner was a volunteer at Holy Name Catholic School and was a Girl Scout Leader and a Cub Scout Den mother.

The couple are members of St. Mary’s by the Lake Catholic Church. He volunteered after the 9 a.m. Mass once a month during the “Meet Your Neighbor.”

When asked what has kept them together all these years, they write, “Love and affection for each other, and love for our six children.”

The Doebereiners spend Saturday nights watching “The Lawrence Welk Show” together.

Their happiest moments were the births of the children and the half-dozen bus trips taken to the East and West coasts.

They have six children: Donald (Sandy) of Sturtevant; Terry (Barb), Judy (Allan) Tripp and Paul (Jennifer), all of Racine; Mark (Jean) of Brookfield; and Sue (Michael) Noland of Overland Park, Kan.

The Racine natives have 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Their advice to young people getting married today: “Be considerate of each other and do not go to bed angry with each other.”
