Police investigation puts cap on weird situation in which a large knife was brought on school grounds
VILLAGE OF WATERFORD - A man driving a homemade convertible was not the United States Army recruiter he said he was when he came to Waterford High School on Thursday.
Johnathan Ray Moralli, 19, of Mukwonago, faces two misdemeanor charges after deputies found a knife in the glove box of the roofless Geo Prism he drove to the school. If convicted of both the carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a dangerous weapon at school charges he could face up to $10,000 in fines and nine months imprisonment.
The charges stem from Moralli's visit to the school earlier this week, according to court records.
The principal called on Racine County Sheriff's deputies working as liaison officers at the school, 100 Field Drive, to help him figure out what was going on. Moralli was wearing military fatigues, but had no identification on him. He said he was an Army recruiter, and that he was there to speak with students.
A deputy contacted the Burlington Army Recruiting Office and spoke with a sergeant. The sergeant came to the school and said Moralli was not representing the military, and that he had been discharged from the Army for being absent without leave. The sergeant further said that while Moralli was wearing active duty patches on his fatigues, he was not, in fact, active military.
Deputies spoke with Moralli again and he reportedly said he had driven to the school in a blue Geo Prism that had the roof cut off and graffiti written on the sides. When deputies ran the car's information, they found it listed to someone else, and its registration had been suspended. Moralli said he had just purchased the car, and had the title and bill of sale for it, but that it was not registered.
The deputy said he was concerned about how Moralli had come to school wearing a uniform when he was not active military, and asked for permission to search the car. Moralli reportedly gave permission, and told the deputy he would find a knife in the glove box.
Deputies found a black-handled knife with a 6-inch blade in a leather sheath in the glove box. Moralli said he had the knife at night for his own protection.
He said he had been living in Mukwonago with his fiancee for the past two weeks. He said he was from California and that he had been in the Army in Georgia. The woman said the two were not engaged, and said Moralli was "kind of her boyfriend."
Deputies also contacted Moralli's stepmother in California, who said she believed Moralli was in Montana with his godmother, working as a deer skinner.
