RACINE - John Dillinger's 1933 bank robbery in Racine will be depicted in the new Johnny Depp movie "Public Enemies, but the scene will be shot in Milwaukee.
The specific location and date have not been formally released.
"There are always changes at the last minute for a variety of reasons," said Dave Fulton, publicist for the Universal Studios film.
A spokeswoman from the Milwaukee County Historical Center, 910 N Old World Third St., did confirm that a bank scene will be shot there. But she was not certain it was the Racine scene. The center is a former 2nd Ward Savings Bank and was built in 1913. Inside is a large vault which the set is being created around, said spokeswoman Kathleen O'Hara.
"We are in a lot of dust," O'Hara said. Contractors are also working to re-create bank teller cages and restoring old columns.
On Nov. 20, 1933, the famous gangster and his gang robbed $28,000 from the American Bank and Trust, located at Fifth and Main streets, the current location of the Racine Art Museum. They shot a bank teller and a police officer during the robbery, but no one was killed.
"Public Enemies" is being filmed at several locations in Wisconsin.
