WIND POINT - When Dana Goodsell, 35, saw Montgomery's furry black face and long hair online, she knew he was a perfect match for her parents.

"His eyes looked so familiar," Dana said.

Her parent's Afghan Hound passed away a few months before that, and Montgomery looked almost exactly like their last dog, she said.

There was only one catch. The dog was hundreds of miles away in Arkansas. But that didn't stop her father, Scott, of 12 Raven Turn, Wind Point, and his two daughters.

"The minute we saw him we just fell in love with him," said Scott Goodsell, 62, "The next thing you knew we were on a plane down to Arkansas."

He and his two daughters drove to Chicago, took a 4 a.m. flight to Little Rock, Ark., rented an SUV, drove two hours to Hot Springs and picked up the dog. Then they turned around, drove nonstop 11-12 hours to Chicago to return the rental car and finally drove back to Racine.

Now, a year and a half later, the family hasn't stopped their dedication to the Afghan breed. Dana found Montgomery through the Afghan Hound Club of American Rescue, a national nonprofit agency that helps Afghan Hounds.

A rural Arkansas farmer originally owned him, but realized early that he couldn't handle the attention that Montgomery required and gave him up. His is a fortunate story compared to a more recent case that Dana heard about in New Mexico, and knew she needed to help out with.

Officials found 67 Afghan Hounds in a house and enclosed yard on July 14 during a rescue operation at the house, according to the Afghan Hound Club's Web site.

"When you see the videos and the condition they were in, it's just terrible," Scott said.

"It's just a shame something like that has to happen. That is why we wanted to help out as much as we could."

Dog food and excrement were found mixed on the floor. The fur of the dogs was badly matted and one was found with a ruptured tumor, which was later euthanized.

Of 17 puppies that were found, only three were still alive as of July 22, according to the club. The dogs that are still alive were placed in foster homes and those are the dogs the Goodsells want to help.

Friday and today the two Goodsell children, Dana and Regan, are holding a fundraiser for the Afghan Hound Club to help provide funds for confiscated dogs.

The fundraiser will be today from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. at the Elegant Pauper, 433 Main Street.

People can purchase a glass of lemonade for $1, which will go to help the dogs. Also, $1 from all pet-related purchases will go to the dogs.
