RACINE COUNTY - Racine Area Manufacturers and Commerce will honor six business stand-outs tonight at the Racine Marriott during its annual awards.
Those awards and recipients are:
Business Person of the Year
Sherry Etes, managing member of Uncorkt, will receive this award. Etes started Uncorkt, now at 240 Main St. in Downtown Racine, in June 2004.
The business started on Sixth Street, but did so well that Etes took the present location, doubling her space. She said her business goal was double-digit growth each year, and Uncorkt has met that. With the new location, Uncorkt branched out into microbrewed beers as well as wines.
Downtown Racine Corp. Executive Director Devin Sutherland said Uncorkt has brought new people to Downtown through its business success and special events such as banquets and corporate parties.
He said Etes has also worked behind the scenes to promote Downtown and its special events.
Apollo Award
I.C. Tect will get this award that honors a business owner or entrepreneurial team who started a new and innovative business here. The firm is an incubator company at the Center for Advanced Technology and Innovation, or CATI, 2320 Renaissance Blvd.
Company founder and President Pradeep Jain invented the technology while working for a Milwaukee company. He later bought the technology and used it to launch his own firm.
CATI Executive Director Matt Wagner said Jain's patented software essentially creates standardized documentation within a large industry. In this case, Jain landed a contract with the U.S. Air Force and immediately I.C. Tect began to mushroom adding eight professional positions and tripling annual revenue.
Young Professional of the Year
This award goes to Chris Antonneau, president of David Insurance Co. The award is given in recognition for community service and volunteerism to better the Racine community, while balancing personal and professional lives.
Antonneau will lead the next United Way of Racine County fund-raising campaign. He has also been president of a local Rotary International club and a director of Margaret Ann's Place, an organization which serves the needs of grieving children.
He described his approach to work and leisure as "seven days of a continuous lifestyle of both work and fun wrapped into one."
Technical Excellence Award
The Regional Technology Organization gives this award to Racine County government for developing the broadband high-speed wireless project.
The work was done without county tax money because of the participation of E-Vergent and TC3, two local companies. TC3 developed a wireless study and E-Vergent created the consortium that is building the countywide system.
The project has gained national attention from other municipalities interested in following the Racine County model. Racine County Executive Bill McReynolds will accept the award.
Family Friendly Company of the Year
Runzheimer Corp. gets this award that honors the efforts that employers make to help families balance their family and work responsibly.
Runzheimer, at 1 Runzheimer Parkway in Waterford, provides its employees with benefits that include: flexible work schedules; scholarships and tuition reimbursement; free trips every five years; free family portraits every two years; and sporting event tickets.
Aim for Health Award
The City and County of Racine were jointly awarded this honor. The award is given to an employer in the business community that has made significant efforts in the past year to create or improve a work culture for a health-minded work force.
Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, All Saints, sponsors the award in order to work with the business community to offer health services. Ultimately the goal is to have a positive affect on the financial health of the employer and the overall health of its work force.
