WIND POINT - A seaplane traveling from Kenosha started sinking after a practice landing Saturday.

The plane's pilot, Christopher D. Stone, 51, of Kenosha, radioed that during his 70 mph water landing the plane was damaged and began taking on water at 1:08 p.m. near the Wind Point Lighthouse, according to a press release from the Racine County Sheriff's

Department.

The Racine Sheriff's Water Patrol responded to the scene to find the plane operating in circles with the left pontoon torn from its wing mountings, the release said.

After power to the plane was shut down, the pilot was taken aboard the patrol boat where he helped officers lift the damaged wing and attach air filled boat fenders, allowing the boat to be towed to shore between North Beach and Zoo Beach in Racine, said the release.

Stone later said he believed he struck an object such as a log during the landing.

Caledonia police assisted with the rescue effort.
