CALEDONIA - About 45 acres of park land in the village were dedicated this month.
The Caledonia Conservancy, a non-profit land trust, recently held dedications for two parks. On Sunday, they dedicated a 32.5-acre parcel of land at the corner of 5 Mile Road and Green Bay Road as King's Corner. The park is named in the memory of Kingston Ehrlich, a local real estate developer.
"I could have sold it, but I thought he'd like this better," said Toni Ehrlich, his wife. "I think it's fun for them to have it, because it will stay green forever."
The dedication was held at a granite pillar set up as a tribute to King at 5 Mile Road and Crown Chase Drive. The conservancy has been working on the King's Corner land for the past nine months, according to conservancy president Sandy DeWalt.
"He was one of the first ones to bring a lot of horseback riding to the area, and realized the importance of keeping things rural," DeWalt said.
The property has open fields, wooded areas and horse trails. DeWalt said they are cutting walking trails, which are expected to be open by the fall.
The other park that was dedicated was the Wendy McCalvy Tabor Woods, on July 13. McCalvy, a Village Board member, was a member of the conservancy before she was elected to the board and helped found the organization.
"Wendy did so much work in helping to raise funds and helping to keep the project on track," DeWalt said. "It was our way of giving back."
The 13.8-acre parcel of land is south of 6 Mile Road at the west end of Wooded View Estates, and has been open for two years. It has walking and horse trails, and a seven-car parking lot at the end of Tabor Road. The conservancy may also add a walking platform around the edge of wetlands in the woods, DeWalt said.
Both parks are open to the public.
